Airfares are much higher in the summer and around school holidays. If the trip took place in July as opposed to May, expect to add about $1k making the trip cost 4,500 rather than 3,500. Off season is cheaper...

From a school in Denver, the French 5th graders traveled to France in the fall of 2010 for the 12th year in a row, the Spanish 4th and 5th graders went to Spain and the English-only 5th grade class traveled to Washington, D.C. to conclude their American History studies. A trip to China for the Mandarin 5th graders will be coming in the future.

Can you pls name this school? Thanks! I live in denver and am so curious.

Some people in life will have more than you: more ambition, more determination, more energy. Some will have less. Teach your child to get used to it now.

I hope I don't know you. I hope you aren't a teacher. I hope you have no way of ever really shaping the mind of a young person. What you said there is monstrous. I don't believe in devils or angels but I do think what you are saying is an example of pure evil.

I don't see how this original quote was negative. None of these attributes are innate.

And it's Yu Ying's fault that they couldn't handle the challenges. Of course.

They went to Basis because they couldn't handle the challenges of Yu Ying? LMAO

Laugh away. A former Yu Ying parent made no secret of the fact that her special ed child wasn't a good fit and thus was moving to Basis.

And another parent sent out an email to the entire YY list serve stating that her child thrived at Basis' summer program because Basis provide structure where there was none at YY. What exactly is your point.

Not exactly--what she said was that Basis had more structure not that Yu Ying had none. She also said they are walking distance from Basis.

You are so right! Especially the principal, whose own son is in that class

Hm, that implies that YY is failing in their mandatory requirement to help SN students. If a child can survive at Basis with the proper help in six grade algebra and Latin, surely the same child can survive in YY with flighty no-book instruments. That is, provided the child was given proper help.

We have a SN child in a lower grade and could not be happier and I know other parents with SNs kids at YY who feel the same. The school works very hard at meeting the needs of SN kids and creating an inclusive environment. YY has a new program this year where the SN teachers visit the student's home early in the school year to help the child acclimate to them and get to know each other better. Also, the service providers have been great and very caring.

But then it shouldn't be during the school year. Perhaps instead of the usual summer school?

It's not mandatory. No one is forcing anyone to go. Parents have the choice of sending or not like any other field trip - a very expensive one but why should tax payers foot the bill. If they can raise the funds or pay for it on their own, that's fine.

Exactly. Too bad the charter board can't give priority to people who are interested in Mandarin. They won't be the ones bitching about a Chinese immersion school having a trip to China as part of their curriculum.

If it were part of the curriculum then how do you justify that the school is not paying for it? Public schools can't charge for required components of the education. Therefore, if it is part of the curriculum then the school needs to foot the bill for all students. But if it is optional, then it needs to not be during the school year.
