I have heard of it for a girl. I actually kind of like it.

I immediately thought of the witch trials, though once the child is born, I believe the association would fade. It also does look and sound a bit Muslim/Arabic.

There was recently a pilot on Amazon about a model played by Leslie Bibb called Salem Rogers.

I am too contemplating naming my daughter Salem. I like the historical meaning BEFORE the witch trials which actually has positive connotation. Historic spiritual writings highlights this name-promoting peace, solidarity and completeness. I certainly don't expect the ignorance of not "knowing" what the witch trials were or that there's a cancer stick/cigarette brand by that name to go unnoticed. Lets teach our kids to have a mind and personality of their own which should add to hopefully positive associations or possibility of a not negative "Salem" word. Charles Manson, Jim Jones, The cult phenomena movie Carrie certainly hasn't stopped people from naming their children these names. Because these names are so popular and robotically created we don't look twice or associate little kids with mass suicidal promoter murders, serial killers, or demon possessed kids/people do we? Come on...

People only think of cigarettes, cats and witch hunts because that is the only association of the name they have been exposed to. "Don't name your kid that, too much negative energy!" I call Bullshit!!! Parenting your child the best you can will obliterate "negative energy" Its like saying all the Noah's and Liam's of the world will be "perfect angels" when they grow up. Guess what, that's statistically impossible!

There are a lot of words which mean peaceful which shouldn't be used as a name.

Friedlich and Salem fall into that category.
