But apparently the clubs have no locker rooms for women, given the number of women I see in tennis whites walking around town in Chevy Chase/Bethesda.

Columbia, Chevy Chase and Congressional are the big three in terms of the quality of their golf courses. Kenwood is a fine club, but the course is lacking and is not nearly as well maintained as any of the big three - not even close. Woodmont is a great course/club too (I'd add it to the 3 C's mentioned above) but I believe the initiation is the most expensive of the local clubs (Chevy is $85k, Columbia is $80k, Woodmont is $125k (I think) and Congressional I believe is in Woodmont's range).

Also, my experience is that the members at all of these clubs treat the employees with the utmost respect which is why many of the employees remain for many years. There is very little turnover in the staff of these clubs. Of course there are exceptions and some may be rude to employees, but I see this happen more often at non-club restaurants than at any of these country clubs. Being rude to staff is a cardinal sin at most of the clubs in the area.

Really? Then why does old money disdain people for failing to change out of their tennis whites before dropping by the supermarket?

"I grew up at clubs and loved him as a child - great swimming, etc. But I've always been a little secretly amused by "tennis ladies" who walk around OUTSIDE the club in tennis whites. Even as a child I found it sort of pathetic and wondered why they seemed to love wearing whites to the supermarket and while running errands."

Me too! This area is a "little" pretentious. A little too "new money" for me. Humility....anyone.....anyone....hello???
"Old money" is decent to people. Period.

And, OP, you need to check your attitude. The cute reference to those who may $250K as not really middle class in this area (as if you know anything about those folks -including mine- financial situations an what they can/cannot afford) had me not giving a %$$#$ about whether you're left out socially or not. You sound not really nice.

Not the OP, but I didn't find her initial comment to be offensive at all. In fact, just the opposite. It is funny that around here, some people may think that 250K isn't a lot of $ and "middle class" can mean many different things. She was saying that $250K IS a lot of money. How in the world is that offensive? Are you offended and think that's "not nice" b/c you are struggling to make ends meet at $250K?

And, they have a long history of excluding Jews as well, starting with land covenants and then less overtly and formally over the years.

And I know a family that was rejected many years ago because they had a non-white adopted child.

I babysat for many families who were members of Chevy Chase and this is absolutely true. I felt like throwing up every time I had to take the kids there.

I don't understand why this would make you vomit. I can understand if they were asking you to take them to some harmful place. But it's a freaking country club. Certainly not everyone there is a racist. Maybe they liked the pool. And if it was a harmful place, did you broach the subject with the parents and express your concerns? ... what were your concerns?

Should have made myself clearer. The only black or Hispanic people at the club were people that worked there. In fact, most of the workers were not white. While some adult members were polite, others were flat out rude to people who worked there. Many of the kids were also rude. It was clear that I was just a babysitter and no one talked to me. I felt like throwing up every time I went there because I felt out of place and like I was about 2 inches tall.

Congressional is not mostly corporate memberships. The author of that statement is clearly clueless. There aren't any. Avenel yes.
