My doctor did not warn me about the pain or how to prepare myself for the procedure. I had no idea that the procedure had two steps. I felt excruciating pain. I thought to myself thank god it was over. Then, I was told that Mirena wasn't inserted yet.
dr just measured. I guess that was "clamping" the cervix part. I had no idea of "clamping". I almost scrambled off the table. I yelped when dr finally inserted the Mirena. ugh..it was very painful. I never had kids, so my cervix was "virginal" and tilted. It felt like passing a kidney stone. And that feels like an ice pick being stabbed into body

I tried getting it done at my gyno, but it wouldn't go in and having my cervix opened for that many tries really hurt. I haven't had any kids so I've heard that the cervix isn't as "inviting" compared to women who have had kids. They gave me 6 Advil but it I still had the worst cramps ever afterwards for hours. They don't give you you money back unless you try it again, and needless to say I didn't exactly want to go through that again...

Uhhhhhh. I just got mine placed today... OUCH! I know everyone is different but that was so uncomfortable. It feels like you are getting a pap but just a little bit longer. As soon as my doctor clamped my uterus, the nurse said that was the worst part. She was not kidding... Then the IUD went in and my abdomen immediately started cramping, felt nauses & hot. I've been in bed all day now from the pain, trying to control it with IPB & naproxen. I was warned that since I do not have children & almost 26, they usually do a smaller one that last 3years yet I go for the 5 since my insurance cuts out in 2 weeks. My best advice for someone looking into this is try it, if its soooooo horrible after a week, get it out! Also, I have a huge pain tolerance. I'm tattooed all over my body plus a hood piercing. I would rather tattoo my face before getting this done again. Don't compare yourself to my situation and find a really great OBGYN that knows what they are doing. To each their own! Good luck if you go for it & hopefully you won't feel like your about to have a baby!

It wasn't terribly painful but the nurse forgot to tell me to take a painkiller in advance to relax myself and make it easier to dialate. As a result it took a while to insert.

I just had mine inserted today. I took 800 mg of Advil beforehand, and breathed deeply, did reiki on myself, and tried to relax into the pain instead of resisting it. I still actually passed out. Which I don't think has ever happened in my life. I am still taking 400 mg of Advil every few hours and not getting up unless I have to use the bathroom. I had to call my bf to pick me up and take me home. I have been nauseous slightly and crampy, and emotional. The emotional part could be from getting my period today.
The last thing I thought before I passed out was, "if childbirth is anything like this, I don't think I want to have kids". I am very grateful to have found this forum and read that other women consider this more painful than childbirth. Phew. I hope this thing is trouble-free and worth it. And my goodness, I sure hope it isn't like this when I have it removed.

I had a paraguard inserted about 8 weeks post-partum. I took some ibuprofen before hand, and I think they also used some numbing gel on my cervix. It was a total breeze, just felt like some slight cramping. And my periods have been fine - a little heavier than before but not more painful.

Even if it was more painful I would still have done it. it's GREAT to have a super effective birth control method that I don't have to think about at all, and that involves no hormones. (Mirena does have hormones but much less than the pill.)

I have had paragard inserted twice. cramp for a couple seconds and that is it. Ask the doctor how frequently he or she inserts them - experience matters.

I have had endo for 17 years. No kids. I took misoprostol 2 hours before. My period cramps can be a 10 of 10. Just having the Dr use the clamp was this bad. I could not get the mirena. Doctor said I would probably have to be put under just to get the iud. I tried pills for years but they do not really work anymore between the cramps and/or side effects. I am on nuvaring but bleed most of the time. Doctor said my next options are dnc or forced menopause.

Had a cervical block and felt nothing. Has never had a baby. Do not have a high pain threshold.

I just had mine inserted today. I have not ever been pregnant or given birth. However, I have broken bones close to a dozen times, ruptured tendons, and dislocated a rib and a shoulder at the same time. The Mirena insertion was more painful than any of those experiences, and I took misoprostol the night before to soften my cervix. It is the first time in my life that I can actually remember screaming in pain. This was immediately before I blacked out. I was told to to lay completely flat for half an hour afterward. When I stood up I was still completely ashen grey. I was shaking too much to drive myself home from the clinic, so Ia to call a friend to leave work and give me a ride home.

Nine hours later and I am feeling much better. Now it just feels like bad menstrual cramps. As long as it stays in there, I would say it is worth the pain for five years of contraception.

Just had this done and was not prepared at all for how incredibly painful that was. My doctor told me women rarely cry and they never scream, etc. I was bawling. The nurse then told me that women cry and scream and curse and I shouldn't feel embarassed. I would have taken the Xanax or Valium they offered if I had any idea what I was in for. Now the cramps afterward (it's been a few hours) are horrible too. Hope it improves quickly - pain meds aren't helping.

I hardly noticed when mine was inserted, and didn't even really have cramps afterwards.

I had my mirena put in today and it was one of the worst painful things I have ever experienced. Mind you I have had a baby a little more then 2 years ago and it wasn't as bad but pretty darn close. I would suggest to be sure to eat before and take some pain meds. I wanted to
Vomit and pass out afterwards. I had to lay back down the nurses gave me cold compresses for my head, water and crackers. It helped a little enough to drive home but the cramping was Unbelieveably painful.

I just had mine inserted, and it was painful...I couldnt believe it, for that pain I sho hope its worth it in the long run.....

I had forgot to take Motrin or ibproufin and it was the most painful experice...I felt very light headed after and got sick if you do get it done please remember to take Motrin or ibproufin
