WISC IV is acceptable, provided it was given by a VA licensed psychologist. 95% places the child around 125, which may or may not be good enough. Multiple factors go in to the process.

Good luck to you! Hope it works out.

This is part of the reason why I'm pursuing it now. Plus, this will be poor DD's fourth school in five years and I really don't want her to go through yet another transition (regular class to AAP class) if we can avoid it.

As a new student your DC will qualify for COGAT testing in the fall. Then depending on the scores you can apply for the AAP program for January 2012 or the following fall.

Is there any correlation between the COGAT and the WISC-IV scores (similar to the way they used to list your SAT score and then the equivalent in ACT terms?)

I ask because we only have the WISC-IV to go on (we're moving back to Fairfax this summer and our current school does not do standardized testing). The evaluation we received from the psychologist showed some superior scores in one section, but I wonder if her less-than-superior scores in another section mean that perhaps we shouldn't pursue AAP entrance for her.

Is a score in the 95% good enough for consideration, or would have to be in the 99%?

Yes, I questioned the composite score, but was told it was correct. FWIW, it wasn't enough to put him in the pool (ie, the magical 130 cutoff score). DC #1 is a Feb birthday, DC #2 is Nov.

Not in the pool because the 130 was a composite not a subtest? that seems odd!

Well, good luck!

The reason that composite score is higher than all subscores is due to the rarity factor. It's relatively easier to have one relatively higher score in one section, but it's harder to have relatively consistent higher scores across all three sections, therefore higher composite. Composite is not just mean of all three.

No... it just doesn't happen. I believe the composites are also age based. Say two kids have the exact same high score...but DC #1 is five months younger than DC#2. Higher composite.

It happens. Someone else on this forum posted that phenomenon.

How can the composite be 130 of none of the subscores was over 130? That's odd.

We had very similar scores last year (don't have them out right now), and I thought ds was a shoe in. Alas, he did not get in (he was automatically in the pool). I asked for the file afterwards, and his GBRS was a 9. I had a conference with his teacher and guidance counselor later in the year (about something separate), and though they said behavior did not (and was not supposed to) figure into the GBRS, they said they would not be the least bit surprised if ds matured over the summer and skated in on parent referral this year. (which told me the GBRS was in fact impacted by his silliness, immaturity, etc.)

We did appeal last year, but not with WISC. He did not get in on appeal, which I suspected. This year we submitted a parent referral in the hopes that his new teachers' GBRS will be much higher. WISC was not a financial option for us last year or this year.

The way our school based Level IV works is that one teacher teaches Math/Science and another teaches Language/Social Studies. Though my ds is not in the Level IV group, he has both Level IV teachers. Both said he would have easily done well in the Level IV group. Hoping for a better GBRS this year. For us, that was the deciding factor. I know many who did not have the scores to qualify for the pool, but had high GBRS and got in.
