Woodson students don’t have to drive on a major interstate(even the most westward students could just take Pope’s Head to Braddock etc) but nice try.

Many people would prefer young drivers limit their time on interstate highways. Is that really that hard to understand?

I grew up here and took drivers ed here, and the first thing they do is take you on the highways due to the layout of this area and how you typically get around. Many accidents happen on old keene mill/burke center pkwy/etc and not actually on the highways and involve stopped cars/traffic lights, so yeah....still not understanding it.

Coming from Bren Mar going to Springfield, you have to get on at Edsall and immediately merge over to the third lane from the right. It's a tricky maneuver for many adults, at least based on the number of times I've almost gotten hit there. I would not want a teen driver doing that until they get some more experience.

Seconding this. I do this commute regularly and it is not an easy merge. The merge area is short, plus you have drivers getting to the right at the last minute to go to 495.
The other option to avoid highways is a longer route and the kids will pass by Edison on the way to Lewis. A huge highway interchange should not be in the middle of a school zone. That does not build community

The Woodson community is quite happy to extend from adjacent to the 495 beltway all the way to west of 286, so major thoroughfares and criss-crossing across the map is not the problem.

Why would this be a joke. Just Google Lewis Leadership Program and you will see all the good press.

How many students have transferred to Lewis for the leadership program? Because the transfer portal shows many students transferring out of Lewis for different reasons. Including many to Edison (language, STEM) and Lake Braddock (AAP). The leadership academy is not going to draw students to one of the poorest and highest ESL schools in the county.

They won't let kids pupil place any longer for a foreign language, but they'll let kids pupil place for the "Lewis Leadership Program."

Whatever they've done hasn't sold many people on the program. There were 24 kids transferring into Lewis this year, and 241 transferring out. And most of the 24 transferring in may have transferred for reasons unrelated to the leadership program.

When you compare all the buzz around new Skyview HS with the weak efforts to develop something meaningful at Lewis, it's fairly obvious where Reid's interests lie, and they aren't with the Lewis Leadership Program.

Curious - did they change the pupil placement policy such that it doesn't allow transfers for foreign language? How are they justifying not letting students transfer? Are they making them take the language online?

I think it's that you can only language transfer into a school that is open to transfers? There were a lot of kids in German immersion from the Orange Hunt going into Irving and WSHS as part of that program, I think. And WSHS hasn't been open to transfers in a while but still had close to 200+ last year.

No, its new policy-- starting next school year.

Yes, no more language transfers.
