So, guaranteed for.....stokes french and yu ying?
For YY, yes as of now. The consequences of the expansion won't be felt for another few years. And there are always ~10 or so students who peel off after 4th grade for BASIS and Latin--though that won't be enough to guarantee spots for the years impacted by YY's expansion. I think the oldest of those kids are only in K now, though I might be wrong about that.
I modeled it out, even with expansion it’s like 20 surplus kids they’re accepting. Given they don’t backfill after 1st, that’s 7 kids leaving a year. Is it a risk? Yes, but a pretty small one.
I thought they added 2 new classes in Pk 3 and 4 at the new campus. If so that’s more than 20 kids per grade. Admittedly I could be wrong—my youngest is in 3rd and the expansion doesn’t affect us so I haven’t been super focused on it.

Yeah I really don't like this. This is supposed to be a feeder track that appears to run parallel to DCPS as an alternative. The system should be organized so that all the feeder elementary schools can send their kids to the middle school.
Who is running this system?
The problem is that Stokes, MV, and DCB got greedy and expanded. The system was developed with set number of DCI seats set aside for each feeder.
All feeders expanded.
But are all feeders allowed to stop accepting new students after first like LAMB? I don’t think so, I think LAMB got that exception because it was Montessori and Spanish. The other schools have buildings and renovations invested in accommodating the expanded sizes, so they’re not going to care about screwing over families until they have trouble filling seats.
And as that interesting PP says, there are enough families for now that either don’t realize or are willing to gamble with their kids’ middle school experience that the impacts on the feeder enrollments won’t be felt for a few years.
Parents at DCI feeders aren’t gambling. They have more options than most parents. I am at one of the feeders and I always knew that DCI wasn’t guaranteed. We played the lottery for 5th and got into BASIS. Other parents played too and didn't get into BASIS or Latin, so they will try for DCI next year. These parents are in a better position than parents with Latin or BASIS as there only options.

So everyone's in the same boat, with DCI feeders having a leg up but no longer guaranteed.
What a mess.
Agreed. What happens to all of those kids when the leg up doesn’t work out? Maybe some have an acceptable IB middle school, but most of the families we know are IB for MacFarland or Brookland middle school. If they have a bad enough number to get waitlisted at DCI, is SH, EH, or any of the other “middle tier”schools an option?
