The previous annex comment was tongue-in-cheek, pp. It is less a case of not being well-read and more a case of not reading carefully.


I get it and it was pretty funny, but someone also said "Alberta" and you didn't rag on that one. I just wanted Scotland poster to feel included. They can submit a sovereign state to this discussion, as can the person who said American is a state of denial - which is true. Denial of reality!

I haven't found any state overly nice or kind, only people. I don't find DC generally unkind, though I'm assuming this thread is to counter that premise.

I lived in the research triangle area, and it was definitely fake. There are a lot of racists. I was shocked at things people would say once I got to know them better and they just assumed I was one of them. I also was surprised at some of the things my best friend at work there encountered (a highly accomplished black woman). Also, during the diversity training seminar it was eye opening how many people grew up in a bubble where they didn't encounter diversity. One man didn't learn that "Jew" wasn't a very until college.

I don't think you can say a state has the nicest people. I have met many nice people all over. It might even be a stretch to characterize a city/town as has having the nicest people.


I was in a shop in the Pinehurst area when I heard two women talking very racist stuff. I was so disappointed but it is the South. Lots of confederate flags.


There are good, kind people everywhere. There are also racists andhypocrites everywhere. There are those who've learned to choose their words carefully but purposely live in expensive, often gated communities, and non-diverse areas. They're actually not interacting much with those different from themselves.


White southerners are not nice people. Don’t be fooled.

We moved a lot while I was growing up. I have another half dozen places to compare Indiana to in terms of living there--not just visiting-- and Hoosiers are my least favorite people. White Hoosiers are the most racist people I've ever encountered. (I'm white.)They are incredibly insular; anyone who isn't from Indiana, Kentucky, or parts of Ohio is suspect. It's also the least intellectual place I've ever lived.

Goes to show you--different strokes for different folks.



So true about those different strokes, because I’d live in Indiana or Ohio in a heartbeat. (No experience with Kentucky.) I travel out there a good bit, and I’ve never been treated poorly.

The people there are kinder and more genuine than in the DC region. There’s also a slower pace of life, so people aren’t as aggressive or rushed

Another vote for Iowa.

I'm surprised by all of the Texas votes. I've lived all over Texas and while it's certainly friendlier than here, it's not that friendly.

I was going to say that this is the least friendly placed I've ever lived. That's true when I'm driving or at a store, but the street I live on is the friendliest place I've ever lived.

I'm a white woman from a mixed family and have had the experience of seeing the mask slip when people meet my non white family members. It's always a bit chilling. Just a reminder that "nice to me" doesn't mean someone is nice generally.
