I have to wonder what the absences have been like for UMC children in elementary school this year.
Probably high. But families are making the choices that are right for them, and if FCPS cared they would change their approach. And if grades or scores were slipping you know the UMC families would change their approach or deal with it some other way. So it seems FCPS is making bad choices and families are adapting as they see fit. Not ideal but I don't' blame anyone for not making bad decisions for their families because FCPS is incompetent.
I totally agree, but FCPS tries to hide chronic absenteeism by guilting families who might pull their kids from school a week before winter break to travel. These families are supposed to keep the average down by carrying on perfect attendance. I mean, that’s why 3 hour early releases were moved to Wednesday in the first place because attendance was down when it was held on Mondays. This year, with poor planning and a lot of Tuesday closures, they created 4 potential 5 day weekends for families not worried about missing 1.5 days of school.
That is 100% why they moved them to Wednesdays.
FCPS has the resources and ability to attract top talent to help address chronic absenteeism which is a real problem. But instead they spend their money on bodyguards and unneeded boundary reviews and bully the people who want to take a day for a family wedding while taking responsibility for making up work while using a disproportionate amount of class time trying to get the chronically absent kids even sort of on grade level.
That's why I gave up at taking attendance seriously. FCPS can only bully you if you let them.

Encourage the parent-leaders at your schools to look into running for seats and support those who do however you can (time, money, spreading the word). Many of the current board members don't have children or have children that aged out of K12 a long time ago. It's not really a surprise they can't make decisions that work for FCPS families.
