Yes, it was very confusing but somehow the alternate timelines explanation made a lot more sense to me than just jumping around in time. It reminded me of a "choose your own adventure" story where Alex is choosing the "correct" paths necessary to save humankind. That kind of clicked in my mediocre little brain!
