I don’t think we’ve had a 2 hour delay for cold since Reid arrived. We used to have them under brabrand but I remember being so puzzled when she arrived and the “myth” of buses not starting in cold was apparently busted.

I totally agree. And with temps in the single digits and nothing has changed at bus stops here. Reid is a moron.

Her decision-making process seems based on “what are neighboring school districts doing?” and “How do I appease angry parents?” rather than practical and safety concerns. If the busses can start and if no kids are hurt, then she’s fine, but as long as we have snow hours to be used, erring on the side of caution is usually a good idea.

Why should they take the Super Bowl into account?

Fcps is bad enough without the delays.

FCPS has 70 electric buses. This is small number in their fleet of over 1,500 buses. I wonder if the electric buses are able to run this weather or if they need to go back to the depot more frequently to get recharged.

They can run. There is no reason they wouldn’t turn on due to the cold. Their range (rated at a couple hundred miles) is reduced in cold weather (largely due to running heat), but even with reduced range it is still plenty to complete daily runs.

Starting a diesel engine when it is close to zero can be challenging without a block heater for the engine. However, there are winter-grade fuels that make starting diesel engines much easier. I would be surprised if FCPS is not using either block heaters or special winter fuels.

I guess that we will find out tomorrow! I'm ready to drive my kids to school if needed.
