This seems to be because MCPS takes on the liability burden of getting students to school, whereas other systems do not. Are there creative ways to work around that? Waiver for bus riding/attendance? Optional open days?

So many Frederick Co parents are unhappy with the decision for tomorrow, so it will be interesting to see their attendance rates. I have heard some parts of Carroll Co are okay, but they would have far less walkers than MCPS.

My Frederick friends are frustrated with the delay, but mostly just happy they're not closed.

Because of y’all.

The public comments process was going to be an unnecessarily drawn out process because all of you think your opinion adds something of value. It rarely does. It just slows down the process and creates a situation in which the many are miserable because you cannot pacify the few.

You work for a system that has for the past 15 years been doing worse and worse at educating students. And since the pandemic massive grade inflation and no real discipline leading to schools that are unsafe for kids and staff. Are you really surprised that families are frustrated and angry? Are you really trying to blame them for MCPS's glaring failures that demonstrate an utter disregard for the wellbeing of our kids?

15 years ago... that's about the same time we started cutting per-pupil funding. Funny how that works.

Maybe we'd be in a difference place for virtual if you were willing to pay taxes. But I know your summer European vacations are so important to you. And especially important to schedule for the end of June, despite the potential for school days.

Most districts have the sense to not do virtual. That's the worse option. This isn't a year-long emergency. Do we can make-up days.

Yes, one of the few good decisions they made was jumping to what we all already know: "virtual learning" doesn't work for too many students to be a legitimate option.

They all probably paid top dollar to private contractors. The county, and more specifically the school system, cannot really do that without budget meetings and votes. I mean it's not the most effective way of doing things but it's how local government pretty much everywhere is set up to operate. I have heard all the rumors that private companies have reached out to MCPS to offer help and that MCPS has ignored them but I bet that probably has to do with the fact these local companies are probably charging 500% of what they normally would.

Our small elementary school already has a small utility tractor with a snow plow. While not very practical for the parking lots, it made quick work of the sidewalks. I don't know how common that is. Even if it's unusual, they only needed to use it for a couple of hours, and those are relatively easy to transport between sites.

School sidewalks seemed to be done pretty quickly in my trip around the Germantown/Gaithersburg/Montgomery Village area. Even schools that had untouched parking lots and bus loops had cleared sidewalks

That combo is still useless.

It is my understanding that building services does the sidewalks at each school and the county plows do the parking lots. Since we've heard many streets are cleared to two lanes, it sounds like there aren't many county plows available to help with the parking lots. It seems like the mcps building services crews have been working hard and most sidewalks by schools are clear... but not bus stops and parking lots. Not sure this is a failure of MCPS as much as the county council budgeting resources and ensuring homeowners and businesses are shoveling their sidewalks. (Also this was a TOUGH one to shovel and there are places it is solid ice and almost impossible to move.)

I don't know of a local district in the DMV that were open today (Thursday).
Looks like Frederick is opening 2 hours late tomorrow. Howard is closed with offices open. Fairfax and Arlington are closed tomorrow (but planned closures for teacher work days).

The county doesn't clear parking lots. A combination of MCPS plows and contractors do parking lots.

Your overdramatics are so boring and childish.

The bite of having to interact with your children for more than 48 hours is bearing down on some, i see.
