One doesn’t need deep insight to notice that he is unfortunately full of himself, which is not the end of the world for a 21 yo but I am surprised his parents don’t keep him in check.
He invented his own nickname, put it on a t shirt and wears it. He skates to his own inspirational quotes.
It’s normal for a young person to feel that their thoughts and feelings are more significant and novel than they are, but there needs to be an adult to tell them it’s ridiculous.

It’s a shame Shaidorov’s win is being overshadowed, especially since it means so much to his countrymen, after their previous Olympic medalist, Denis Ten, was murdered in the street in 2018.

It was a controversial decision at the time in 2022 to send Jason Brown instead of Ilia. That said, Jason Brown performed well and was decently ranked. It’s impossible to say what could have or would have happened. I love Jason Brown and was glad he was on the team in 2022; Ilia did not perform well at that Worlds just a few weeks later.

Anyway, I wish Ilia all the best and hope he continues to mature, as a person and as an athlete. I feel for him, to have skated so well to help USA win team gold and then to fall so short in the individual event.

NP. I heard it, too. I think his point was that the pressure of the Olympics is unlike anything else, and if he'd had a chance 4 years ago, he would've been better prepared this year. I thought he should've gone 4 years ago (Jason Brown didn't have a single quad), but it was immature to say it at that moment. Then again, he's only 21.

There was no logical reason for it to be illegal back then and legal now. I remember too. Women’s figure skating and gymnastics have both changed since then. Back then the the little petite graceful girls were favored. Athleticism wasn’t appreciated the way it is now.

+1 Surya Bonaly was ahead of her times and one of the few black figure skaters and was judged harshly. I hadn't thought of her for 20 years but with the backflips this week, was thinking of her.

Surya was judged just fine. She is a 9 time French national champion, 5 times European champion, 3 times world silver medalist so the judges appreciated her just fine.

A backflip is a definition of a cheap thrill. A showy move with no actual skating skillls. Appropriately, a zero point value element.

Me too. But I also think Petr Gumennik was massively underserved. His jumps were solid, and his skating/artistry was better than Shaidorov's. I didn't think we'd be fair to the Russian athletes. I would've had him in second in the long.
