There used to be TWO strip clubs in Springfield, I believe both owned by the same family. Dauphine's Steak House (where Papermoon currently is) and the 1320 Club which was in Brookfield Plaza. The way Papermoon came about was that either local or state law says that no more strip club licenses can be issued, but those on the books can be continued if someone buys the rights (something to that effect, now a lawyer). So when Dauphine's shut down the license came very close to going away, but at the last minute the owner's of Papermoon bought it. Hence it is still there. Not sure what can be done about it. It is not really adjacent to schools as it sits firmly in the middle of the Springfield business district. I wouldn't mind it going away, but like I said, not sure what can be done. It puts the spring in Springfield (see the Simpsons - hahaha). No one bought the rights for the 1320 Club license, so it expired forever.
The big adult video store (MVC Late Night) went away years ago. If a smaller store is operating somewhere in the area I am not aware. But like the strip club, not sure what can be done about it legally. I have to imagine that the main business they do is not video since that really doesn't work as a business model anymore (you know, the internet).
As for the schools, they suffer due to the fact that central Springfield has absorbed much of the local immigration in the area. So the schools aren't bad, but they do have to work with a high concentration of poor, ESL students from families where the parents themselves have little education. So the scores are going to be lower. Central Springfield was actually very white (and somewhat Asian and Black) through the 90's.
Traffic - it does suck in the Springfield area, but it is certainly not alone around here. And crime is not spiraling out of control. Probably more in central Springfield than say Fairfax Station, but that is almost a given with the higher concentration of humans, businesses, and poverty. But hardly a super rough area.
People just like to trash other communities.
Those of us discussing the strip club aren't trashing the area.
We are saying the residents deserve better from their board of supervisors and zoning.
The strip club is too close to homes and schools.
It need to be zoned out of that residential commercial area, over to the industrial park, warehouses and car repair shops over in that part of Lorton along I-95 just before Fort Belvoir.
Forgot to mention that the strip club license is tied to the location. It can't be relocated. I believe the idea is to get rid of it, but the county is legally limited in what it can do. And while none of us may like it, it's current location is clearly not residential or adjacent to a school. It is smack dab in the middle of the Springfield business district. So we appear stuck with it. Right now I would argue the vacant shopping strip, gas station, and office building at the corner of Backlick and Old Keene Mill are more of a blight than Papermoon.
And former Subaru dealership.
Some of the abandoned stuff at the end of Backlick is FINALLY set to be re-developed last I heard. That’s been in the works for many years but I think Covid set the process back for awhile. Unfortunately it’s probably going to become another luxury plywood apartment building rather than redeveloped shopping, but I guess that’s better than buildings that have been abandoned for 10+ years.
The Subaru dealership (which moved onto Loisdale and is super nice now!) wasn’t included in that since it literally just moved. They also need to do something about the old Nissan dealership on Amherst which used to be the Toyota dealership but now is just being used for U-Haul storage seemingly. But it really does seem like the Board of Supervisors actually wants to do something in this area, finally, after we’ve been cast aside and de-prioritized over literally every other region of the county (Reston, Mosaic, the freaking Rt. 1 corridor of all things …)

My kids are in the 2nd ranked elementary school in the entire state, but I guess that's bootyhole living?
Second in FARMs isnt the flex you thnk it is.
Sangster is 2nd in the state per US News and Report and is in Springfield.
I think the OP is referencing central Springfield and not West Springfield. Some others in this thread have differentiated between the two.
Yes, but when you look up these schools on the US News and Report list they only say Springfield, VA. In fact the address for these schools is Springfield, VA. Keene Mill Elementary is ranked at #19 and it is also in Springfield. This is out of 2,800 elementary schools in VA so I would hardly say that Springfield is a "booty hole". Great families in "Springfield".
Unfortunately, and particularly on this forum, addresses get stereotyped based on their worst area, whether it’s Springfield, Annandale, Herndon, or Sterling.

Those are all West springfield schools.
What are the official West Springfield boundaries? My address in 22153 is Springfield, and when I look at google maps, I live in Springfield, not West Springfield. All of Orange Hunt neighborhood is Springfield, not West Springfield.
22153 is West Springfield. The mailing address is still Springfield but it’s the West Springfield area. There isn’t a West Springfield or North Springfield mailing address.
Not according to google maps boundary lines for West Springfield. Sounds like people are making things up.

Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:I think it is. Close anyway. From what I've seen. Over the past 20 years I've lived in Rosslyn, Clarendon, Falls Church, Vienna, and now -- as of this spring -- on the Occoquan River about halfway between Manassas and Woodbridge. And I've been just about everywhere in NoVA. The Dale City area of Woodbridge is quite awful, but I have an even more negative reaction when I drive through Springfield (which I sometimes do on my commute home when Waze takes me that way).
It's definitely a contender.
You live on the Occoquan River between Manassas and Woodbridge? And sometimes drive through Springfield? I definitely trust your judgement. /s
PP probably lives over on the side of Burke that you can get to from Woodbridge over the bridge by the marina with the restaurants. Not on the water but I think of that area when I read that post.
