There is a lot of drinking at independent schools. The kids are under a lot of pressure and they want a break from it. The thing that really surprises me is how many parents turn a blind eye to it. Or maybe they really don't know that there is kid gets drunk every weekend. But a lot of them do. I won't guess at percentages because I really have no idea but we hear a lot about it during meals in our house. It's not the case of one or two kids repeatedly getting in trouble. It's a new story and a new kid almost every week.

Maybe they speak English as a second or third language...give them a break

I think however harsh that may sound, the idea is that the difficulty of getting into a Big 3 has taken such near mystical proportions, that we, those who have failed to get in, start to believe there must be something almost supernatural about those who do. Simply put, we try to divine why you and not our DC.

There isn't anything supernatural. You need to get over it, and apply again in the next entry year. When your DC gets in, you'll find out right away that these schools are great, but the kids are just kids. This thread is just gross.

As a parent of 2 teens who attend an independent school (yes, one of the "big 3) and who have many friends at a range of public and independent schools throughout the area, ITA that in all schools you get about the same proportion of kids who have sampled alcohol and/or drugs (usually pot these days) and about the same proportion who regulary engage, Former category, I'd guess about 75-80%; latter about 10%. My DC is in a big three high school, with many friends in other private high schools and many friends in public high schools (both DC and MCPS). I think your guesstimate is about right, for both private and public.
