Yeah, no, standing in the cold in short sleeves for maaaybe 15 minutes will not kill anyone.
Right? I shiver looking at some of these kids walking to school in shorts, but I’m not dumb enough to think they literally don’t own a coat or long pants.
Literally no one said that they don't own the clothing. What we are saying is that parents just shrug and say "Susie doesn't want to wear it so I don't make her."
Susie doesn't want to to do a whole lot of things, but it's your job to teach her and guide her. Or are we just letting kids decide everything now?
What decisions did you allow your kids to make?
At what age? In elementary school, they could choose among the items of clothing that were age, weather, and situation appropriate.
No, you can't back it up now. You think it's your job to decide everything. What exactly are your kids allowed to decide?
I JUST told you. Please read it again.
That's it? How sad for your kids.
So your kid decides to go to school in just his underwear? WHY NOT!!!! HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO CHOOSE. Otherwise, you're an authoritative parent. See how ridiculous that sounds?
Your attempt to shame other parents has failed spectacularly. You should probably just step away because you're flailing and spinning out now
No, no.....you started it. Why not let him go in his underwear??? Explain.
DP do you not hear yourself? Do you get that elementary school kids understand social rules and are, by and large not going to ever want to go to school in their underwear? Did your kid ever demand to go to school in his underwear? That's not typical behavior.
I do.....but you kept insisting I'm "sad" because I don't let my kid choose exactly what to wear himself. The example was intended to sound ridiculous because it is. The whole notion that 7 year olds are going to be able to choose appropriate clothing all on their own is ridiculous. That's what I've been trying to tell you. That's why I think it's a parenting failure to let them decide these things completely on their own.
What? A 7 year old absolutely knows that it is not appropriate to go to school in their underwear. That's why you don't see any kids going to school in their underwear. It's not because their mommies are spanking them if they go outside in their underwear.
Who is spanking????? You keep missing the point, intentionally, I assume.
You're trying to argue that because kids don't go to school in just their underwear, they clearly have zero actual power to decide whether to wear/keep a coat on. Therefore, their lack of a coat is a clear sign of poor parenting?!? It's nonsensical.

Yes, and “appropriate” for a kid who overheats easily can mean going without a coat. For most people, this is not a difficult concept.
It was 15 degrees this morning. No human is comfortable in 15 degrees and a wind chill in just a shirt. STOP THE LUNACY.
My 20something friends and I used to go out on weekend evenings with no coat all the time. No point in dragging a hot heavy coat all night. You are so weird.
Sure, let's compare 20 years olds on a night out drinking to 6 and 7 years olds at a bus stop.
But: "no human is comfortable.." Right? No humans?
You were not comfortable. You tolerated it for less than a minute it took to bar hop aided by plenty of alcohol.

Are you joking? Many 7 year olds know how to dress themselves. It's not ridiculous. The problem in your house is becoming clearer.
Apparently, they don',t since they are going out in 15 degree weather without a coat.![]()

He runs constantly at recess so he is not cold then, even without his coat. On Monday, when it was very cold, I convinced him to take his coat in his backpack on the off chance there was an unexpected drill or similar and he'd need his coat. But those times are really rare.
I'd much prefer he did wear a coat! But I spent time forcing him through tears and upset when he was 4 and 5 and 6. Once he hit 2nd grade I told him the choice is his. I'll make sure he HAS a coat that fits and that he "likes" but the actual wearing it? That's up to him.
This! Stop judging other parents because you have a more compliant kid.

Depending on how cold it is and how long they're outside, they literally might not. But ok.

NP. Because kids aren’t allowed to attend school in just underwear?
Ahhh so you are capable of telling them to dress appropriately. Good to know.
Yes, and “appropriate” for a kid who overheats easily can mean going without a coat. For most people, this is not a difficult concept.
It was 15 degrees this morning. No human is comfortable in 15 degrees and a wind chill in just a shirt. STOP THE LUNACY.
