Most parents are “all in” and actively shower the school with nothing but praise and love. A sense of superiority is cultivated in students from day one. Some spin this as creating a strong brotherhood, but for others it is a bit much. There are parents who want a strong Catholic education for their sons but who don’t want to drink the kool aid. I’ve also heard about horrible sportsmanship shown by some of GZ’s teams, which is not embraced by all parents.

Why would someone apply to the school if they don't like the culture? It's clearly a big part of the school and not something they should try to change or apologize for.

Such as? Recent examples only please.

GZ Rugby mom with the math prodigy: take a rest with the posting. We get it, you liked the school for your son.

It truly shaped him and he became a Kairos leader. He still holds it as his most impactful experience at GZ. His younger brother at another school had a great experience and has signed up to lead Campus Retreats as a result, but it did not transform him like it did my older son. My older son has clung closer to his Catholic faith, and I attribute that to GZ.

My son also felt his Kairos event was transformative. He was literally beaming that night at dinner; we didn't learn a lot about the conversations held but was able to get the gist. For my son, the best experiences at Gonzaga were: his math track (skipped algebra 2 and took linear and multivariable senior yr), Purple Rugby and the Kairos event. In the 4 years he spent on Eye street, he never had a complaint. Even the commute, and coming from VA could be brutal, he never minded.

Same with kids from other schools

Anonymous wrote:I would say needing to have the student body work on humility, arrogance, and entitlement is a problem. I wish other G parents would see this as well and make a concerted effort to fix this issue. But unfortunately in my experience that awareness from parents is rare, so my hats to you, PP.

You can generally tell if a Gonzaga parent has drank the kool aid if they have the following on their post: “Eagles Fly High”, “God is Purple”, or seem to think AMDG is only for Gonzaga (!) and not the motto of the Jesuits (and therefore used at every Jesuit grade school, high school, and university).

You're over exaggerating. Gonzaga parents may be supportive of the school but this school is a choice, which indicates the families thought Gonzaga was good fit for their son. If my son had gone to our local public, I would've supported that school as well. Gonzaga is an amazing school, with amazing instructors, programs and then there's Father Lingan - the most kind and generous priest I've met.

Anonymous wrote:So two distinct pictures of Gonzaga here, one where parents of students saw the place has its drawbacks but overall it's a great school and experience.

But on the other side of the coin, we have pellet gun/brass knuckles-wielding feral youth, who bully math prodigies and leave a trail of violence and destruction across the WCAC, from JV swim meets, fencing competitions and other sporting events, and when they're done with that, they head to Moco, and even upper Moco, and rush other schools' parties.

I think at this point we need to government or the FBI to step in because this sounds pretty awful.

My son is considered a math prodigy; took every available math class at Gonzaga (linear and multivariable as a senior.) Played a varisty sport. He was never bullied and I never saw negative behavior at rugby matches. I know of 2 incidents that garnered attention: the Kairos incident and a lacrosse racial incident (3 lacrosse players were expelled in 2023).

Spray painting is different than taking a flag one is destroy destroying property. The other is gonna be returned, unharmed..

Remember when Gonzaga spray painted Georgetown prep football field, they had done it for years, but the numb skulls didn’t realize they had put in turf and it couldn’t just be cut out two weeks later.

So the GZ parents had to raise a hundred thousand dollars to replace the turf.

Lolz idiots.

There's also this old chestnut, which I understand GZ has repeated recently as well:

Stuff like this is how GZ kids get a bad name... other schools wear camo.. lol Damatha is stags so they wear camo to the game against them... GZ boys paint a dead dear purple and put deliver it to Damatha.

To quote a PP, "and it's a tradition. Gonzaga has many!"

Many need to be decommissioned

Boys at most of the schools talked about here do similar pranks. For example, my son plays basketball. During a game, sweatpants with his school name were stolen out of his bag that was in the locker room at Maret. And I’ve heard this is a common prank.
