OP here. I took DCUMS' advice, and DH promised we would be home by 9PM. That's enough time for a quick bath and bed, and I will get some alone time by the fireplace.
And yes, he fishes out of Boston, and it really sucks. We've also considered Alaska. I could easily relocate to Boston or Alaska with my job (MSW in a hospital), but all our friends are here, and DH's mother is in an assisted living facility, so we might move after she dies.

We have a six-year-old, and he has to do the "family tour"; see his grandma and cousins for their quarterly gathering. I'm not fond of my in-laws for several reasons, but I really want to spend Christmas Eve at home, by myself, in peace. Is this too much to ask DH?
Food for thought. Why do we celebrate Christmas? What would Jesus would want you to do on his birthday? Be good to others or read a book with hot chocolate? You are entitled to do what you like on your own birthday but can tolerate an evening with inlaws for your kid and husband. You can start a new tradition to go to a soup kitchen to volunteer on Christmas eve to get good karma AND avoid spending whole evening at inlaws.

But husband wants to go on the 24th. He travels a lot for work “fisherman” so has limited time at home to just visit them whenever. Meanwhile reading a book can happen whenever. OP has 1 kid, this isn’t that hard. Take 2 cars and leave early as a compromise.
It's easier than that.
Husband can take 1 car. Husband can bring the child home if the child needs to return home.
Why would the kid need to come home?
Tired. Bored. The drunks are too drunk. I don't know how likely this is but there are possibilities.
That won’t happen. He will let her fall asleep somewhere. He would readily agree to this plan though.
