My oldest is a college senior and I have been on DCUM since she was a baby and it was a listserv. It’s hard to quit.

Yes. I put that in my prior post. I have a HS junior.

I also like forums. I was very active in an MBA admissions forum when I applied back in dinosaur times. People on here are also interested in schools that I've personally attended, my spouse has attended, or that we visited while looking at DC #1's options. And I participate in lots of other subforums on here.

It's a relief to be anonymous and not have to be too mindful of username persona. That makes it quicker to visit and post.

Any tips for a kid applying to Vandy this year? DC has been told by private CC to downplay their sports (3 varsity sports + travel) and interest in social life in all their applications, including Vandy, in order to focus on the substantive, academic curiosity side of things like their independent study and substantive summer job.

To me, the Common App essay and supplemental feel smart but dry. Consistent with their high stats (3.9 / 1570 / 12 APs) but not true to the more "normal" and social side of DC. Thoughts?

My kid got into Vanderbilt last cycle. Did not discuss sports (national level achievement) AT ALL other than in ECs and Honors.
Dare to Grow supp was about a club they co-founded, which tied (tangentially) to an academic interest.
The personal statement was about personal qualities and community.
Did have a description of independent research in Additional Info.

NP, and I can't speak for OP but I know my mother-in-law has plenty of free time to research and dislikes being a part of conversations that are over her head. She'll probably continue to follow the college admissions landscape until all of her grandkids have been admitted. Thankfully, her participation is relatively silent - she just likes understanding the stakes.
