Please be kind to the teachers giving their own time (outside of their work requirements) for students. We are doing the best we can. We’re giving up time with our own families. My coworker took a day of personal leave to stay home and finish some of hers, something I’ve done repeatedly in the past. This is a huge undertaking for us and we don’t get a ton of support. It’s just supposed to get done.

There’s no reason for that. No teacher has done anything wrong. The deadline isn’t until 11/1.

But by that time it will be 9 months since the student was in that teacher's class (if they aren't currently in a class with same teacher in senior year). Unless student was one of a kind, teacher may have less to say a year since student was in their class. If only teachers could get two weeks off at the end of the school year (at the end of student's junior year) to write LORs!

I wish these worked like references on a resume. Pick 2-3 teachers to be your "references", and if you're a borderline kid in February the AOs reach out to your recommenders and ask for commentary. For the majority of kids that are clear yes's or no's, there's no need for a response.

Same. I cannot imagine giving a teacher a deadline made up by a teenager, just to relieve the teenager’s anxiety, or marching into office hours and announcing that you will sit there while the teacher does the recommendation. This is a FAVOR the teacher is doing, and making it as easy for the teacher as possible, while expressing gratitude is the only appropriate response.

We all work to deadlines because we are all very busy.

I know from personal experience in writing letters of recommendation that writing a good letter of recommendation takes a significant amount of time and thought. I know that you do it on your own time, and I know that you filled multiple letter requests from students. Your hard work on these is really important and is so appreciated!

My DC is a great student but is very shy, so they are working up their nerve to ask for letters of recommendation. They think they are “bothering” teachers, no matter how much I tell them that teachers will greatly appreciate as much heads-up advanced notice as possible.

You people are missing the point. Not blaming the teachers. Blaming this stupid system.

these are the same kids - and parents - who demand retakes I bet

when your kid doesnt get in and you can't imagine why when they had the stats and the essays - remember this comment thread.

Teachers and the HS do not "help" the student get into college, not in most cases. They don't listen to the student's timeline re: application strategy. When given plenty of notice, why not be helpful? They aren't The teachers are doing the bare minimum, and actually might sabotage the kid's chances.

Land the helicopter. Check in Naviance or whatever tool your school uses. It is still October. Colleges don’t penalize student for late references. If not in by the 8th of November follow-up.

Adjust thank you fee based on timeliness of submission.

My kid submitted his part of 6 EA and 1 ED apps weeks ago. The counselor and 1 of 2 teachers have not submitted anything yet. They will take until the Nov 1 deadline.

Have kid talk to college counselor, who will hopefully check in with the teacher.
