I knew three people who "opened up their marriages," and it did not work out (last longer than a couple of years) for any of them.
For two of them, the DHs were well off and a$$holes (i.e., both were senior BigLaw partners, so the a$$hole part is given). Both guys talked their DWs into open marriages (mainly open for the DHs), and it lasted until their DWs wised up and dumped them. From the outside looking in, it appeared that the DWs were stunned by the initial requests to open the marriages. However, once they had some time to get their footing, they were out of there.
For the other one, a buddy's wife suggested opening the marriage because she wanted them to "get a chance to explore life" before they got too old. He was a bright science nerd, and his DW was the first woman to show him any attention. He went along with it for about six months. During that time, she dated like crazy. Meanwhile, he stayed home at night, taking care of their kid while earning 90% of the HH's income.
He ended up meeting a woman who was not as pretty as his wife, but she was very interested in wielding his lightsaber. After meeting her, he told his DW that the marriage was now very open for her because they were getting a divorce. By then, his DW was ready to close it back up. However, he was done and ready to move on with his new love.
