The White House is pushing Harvard for a major financial settlement in negotiations to restore more than $2 billion in frozen funds, according to a person familiar with the talks — and demanding that Harvard cough up even more than Columbia University did earlier this week.
United States President Donald Trump is personally pressing officials involved in the negotiations to ensure Harvard pays more than Columbia’s $220 million deal, the person said, adding that Trump believes exceeding that sum would set an example.
The Trump administration has publicly framed the Columbia deal as a “template” for future settlements with elite universities like Harvard. Trump himself has zeroed in on Harvard because of a personal disdain for the University, according to the person, treating the school as a centerpiece in his broader campaign against higher education.
Wait til Trump does this to every other elite university in the country. Trump has legalized extortion, apparently.
First they came for Columbia
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Columbia alum
Then they came for Harvard
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Harvard alum
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

Trump's cutting funding has nothing to do with federal civil rights law. Trump is cutting research to combat anti-Semitism. Try to keep up with MAGA logic.

But there’s the rub. Harvard receives nearly half of its funding from the federal government. So yes, it can be woke, and the federal government can also choose not to give it $3 Billion annually if it wants.
The money largely funds scientific research. Which generally has nothing to do with who is admitted to the undergrad school.
But you keep on telling yourself that to justify the President wasting time on this stupidity. Or how about you pledge not to take any medicines or medical treatments that were developed in any way, shape or form at any of these schools. Because they are all so horrible.
DP but are you just that naive or stupid? According to your logic, I can murder people as many as I want so long as also donate to feed the homeless?
Wow. That is truly scary. Comparing college admissions to murdering people. Alrighty then. The Kool Aid runs deep in your veins. To continue your awful analogy, I'm guessing that if Trump, as he put it, murdered someone on national TV (even Fox News!) you would still vote for him. Because he is perfect. And you have been brainwashed to think that Democrats are pure evil and can do no right.
You’re not intelligent enough to have an adult conversation, as i suspected.

Imagine criminals write these in their jail cell. It’s funny.
It's actually a spin on a famous poem referring to people who refused to speak out against the Holocaust. People use it when they talk about how people refuse to speak out against wrongdoing because it doesn't affect them directly, and eventually the leopard does in fact bite their face.
You think I don’t know that? But when perpetrators say that, it makes it sound really funny.
Go call your nurse and have them give you your meds. Accusing those speaking out for academic freedom and against extortion of being perpetrators makes you sound insane.
Racial discrimination is academic freedom? You’re trying too hard to redefine the term.
You're very confused. No one--not even Trump--is threatening Harvard's funding over racial discrimination. You need to learn to read.

Judge Allison D. Burroughs did not issue a ruling during a crucial hearing, which lasted more than two hours in her courtroom in Boston. But she did seem receptive to Harvard’s arguments, as both the school and the government sought to have the case decided in their favor without a trial.
The judge unleashed a barrage of pointed questions at the lone Justice Department lawyer. She demanded to know, for instance, how the administration could reasonably tie withdrawal of medical research funding to concerns about the civil rights of Jewish people.
And she appeared bothered by the administration’s hurried approach to attacking Harvard’s research funding, suggesting there were potentially “staggering” constitutional consequences if the government could punish a university without due process.
Monday’s hearing came two months after Harvard sued the Trump administration. In the lawsuit, Harvard accused the government of threatening the school’s First Amendment rights when it conditioned federal funding on the university bowing to a set of Trump administration demands. Beyond free speech concerns, a central question in the case is whether the Trump administration ignored rules and procedures when it blocked the funds.
The administration framed its tactics as a righteous response to antisemitism. But Harvard and its allies saw the roster of federal demands as intrusions untethered from trying to eradicate discrimination.
One of the Trump requests is to stop DEI, which is racial discrimination.
How is DEI racial discrimination?
OMG! Really! Because it gives preferential treatment based on race!!!
When someone claims, without evidence, that a Black or Brown person in a position of significance is a “DEI” hire, they’re making three admissions. They:
1. Believe all positions of significance belong to them by default.
2. Believe Black and Brown people are inherently inferior and that there HAD to be a White person more qualified.
3. Believe that sharing power fairly disadvantages them, which is an unconscious acknowledgment that they currently hold it all.
The case as it stands has little to do with DEI. The DOJ's case is that Harvard's alleged antisemitism justifies the cuts to their research funding. The judge (who is Jewish and who news stories say has a family who escaped the pogroms) was struggling to understand it, as was I.

“Let’s assume for the sake of argument that Harvard has not covered itself in glory on the topic of antisemitism,” she said, noting her own Jewish faith. What, she asked, was the relationship between antisemitism and cutting off, for instance, cancer research funding?
“You’re not taking away grants from labs that have been antisemitic,” she said.
Mr. Velchik replied that the government had discretion to direct public money as it saw fit.
“You’re saying you can terminate a contract for any and all reasons, even if the reason you’re giving is a violation of the Constitution?” Judge Burroughs asked Mr. Velchik at one point, her doubts made clear by her tone. At another moment, she said, “I don’t think you can justify a contract action based on impermissible suppression of speech.”

Anonymous wrote:Why would the administration even want to reach a settlement with a fine ? Harvard needs totally new management and a new board and new governance to undo the toxic culture. Money is not going to change things. Firing people will. Besides $500 million fine for the research grants to be reinstated is left pocket, right pocket stuff. Trump should stay steadfast until Harvard changes.
