Why does cooking make someone a Stepford wife? What do you call a dad who likes to cook?

I prepare most evening meals because that happens to be when I have down time.

My boys are college students now, and home for the summer. Everyone in the house knows how to cook, so we're flexible about who does it, and there are plenty of evenings where our plans don't align and it's every one for themselves. Usually when DH or I prepare a meal, everyone sits down together for dinner.

When kids were in high school, DH made breakfast every morning, and I made dinner every weekday night, DH cooked on Sunday, and we usually went out one night, so we had those meals together. It wasn't a hard and fast plan, just the way it usually worked out, and the kids learned to cook by helping and taking over various meals from time to time, plus making lunch and fending for themselves if we went out.

Why did I have children? To love them and take care of them. One of the ways I show my love is through giving my children a wonderful haven in my home. So, yes, I will feed them delicious foods! If I don't feed my own kids then whose kids am I going to feed? Neighbor's kids?

My mom used to cook so much- South Indian vegetarian food. I can cook several dishes from my childhood, but not all at once, and I’m not great at some of the standards, like roti (flatbread). My kids like to cook and also eat non veg like their dad. The 13 year old has gotten surprisingly good this summer, but they both have greatly expanded our home cooking repertoire.

I don’t know. Last night I didn’t feel like cooking. My 12 year old and I went to the pool and had hot dogs. DH had a sandwich and some leftover beef stew. My 16 year old got home at 9pm from driver’s ed and made himself a BLT.
If it were during the school year, I probably would have made my teenager dinner or at least made sure that he got something to eat before he left. But things are a little looser in the summer.

I or DH did it when they still lived at home. So far, one was out at 19 and two at 18. SS bounced between DH and his mom’s until he was 21.

Now that they are launched, they better understand how being responsible for dinner e every night is a huge ask.

You can eat together as a family when you kid cooks for you too. If my kid laid around all day and then hit me up for dinner after I worked all day, they would be the one and only time he did. Everyone works in my family.

This. Not sure why summer is any different from the rest of the year. I or my partner make several meals a week, and whoever is home eats at the table together. The kids still have responsibility for at least one meal each, for everyone who is at home.

No, he doesn't know how to cook. He got accustomed to eating canned vegetables and boiled chicken. Just low expectations and standards passed on through the generations.
