He's just looking to get results that tie autism to vaccines. He'll make sure "his" researchers confirm "his" idea and then we can all fight to get next generation vaccinated for tetanus, measles, polio, all that good stuff.

I'd put money on him flat-out ignoring research that goes in another direction including this:

This is a possibility. I have an autistic niece in her 20s. Her parents died and she is living in a group home. She’s like a small child. She loves to color and do elementary school math books. She works at a supervised job 9-3. Our family takes her out on weekends and she can sleep over.

She will never have a baby unless she is sexually assaulted. Fortunately she lives in a home with female workers only. She would be a target if this creep got his way.

If my child was on the other end of the spectrum I would remove the diagnosis . No label needed.

I'm glad she's in a safe place and has family who love her nearby. Some are not as fortunate with their living situation or they tend to wander, in which case I think a tubal ligation can be of benefit.

Whether or not it’s a good idea for individual people with special needs would be better off if they can’t have children, and that decision being reached by their parents/guardians and doctors, is very different from the discussion at hand. The discussion at hand is that the government is considering creating a registry of people with autism, and history shows us where that can lead. One possible outcome is forced sterilization. The person promoting the idea doesn’t understand anything about autism, which makes it even scarier. Please don’t promote the benefits of sterilizing people with special needs on the thread talking about a possible autism registry.

First thing i thought when i saw this is my BiL and SIL in the midwest, big trump supporters and so so upset that they were paying outrageous amounts of taxes (they are not but still). Now their investments are very down due to the tariff charade and now this. Their kid is on the spectrum so I am sure they must be excited about this proposal. BUT MY TAXES ARE TOO HIGH!!!

Genuine question: Do their taxes — and the taxes of their neighbors — in any way support resources and interventions needed by their kid?

This is a registry that seemed to work. The community is still waiting for the monetary compensation part:

I just don’t get the vaccine hatred people have when they so clearly work.

Because your average American has very low IQ.

It’s not IQ, it’s the conspiracy mindset. Starting in the 1960’s there has been a constant drumbeat that you can’t trust authority, and what “they” say must be a lie. After sixty years we now make up our own truths, and cherry pick bits of “data” across the internet to prove our points.

But people believe all of that junk because they have very low IQ. Go lookup IQ rankings by country. America is low. It's also why hardcore bible thumpers still exist in the US and there are large swaths of the country where they pump religion everywhere every day. Very low IQ people.

DP. Out of curiosity I did look up mean IQ by country. At 99.7, average US IQ is equivalent to that of Great Britain (99.7) and nearly equivalent to Scandinavia (99.6). From available data, it appears that average IQ in the US is not low, and belief in antivaxx and conspiracy theories does not appear to be caused by, or to be correlated with, IQ differences.

Which is like. US ranking below Thailand, Vietnam, Russia, and even countries like Mongolia and Belarus. And we are FAR behind intelligence of countries like China, Japan, and South Korea. Americans are pretty f'in stupid. Period. That's why they still believe in all the vaccine wackiness and think God will cure their disease.

You believe the self-reported IQ scores from Russia and China? Who's believing propaganda now?

Aww look you hurt MAGAs feelings saying they are low IQ....which they are.

Psst...the PP called Americans low IQ. That means you, too.

LOL we can tell your butt hurt MAGA-it's ok. Go back and read about who the PP was talking about. Those easily guzzling down a fictional bible and following without questioning religion. PSSSt it's all you MAGAS.

IQ is a dog whistle frequently used in a racist way to target the black community. As a black American and a scientist, I will push back against this nonsense regardless of whether it's from the right or left. Saying non-vaxxers are just 'dumb and low IQ, LOL' isn't true or helpful. It just creates more vitriol and prevents the real issues from being addressed.

DP. I've seen IQ used to denigrate lower classes. I've mostly seen it as a way to show superiority in the moment. I've not seen it used to target a specific race or community, but I learn something new every day.

Certain heavy metal poisonings (water pollution, air pollution) are reported to create entire low IQ communities. This even happened during the Obama administration. Obama himself did not agree that —water in lead for instance— lowered IQ.

Its controversial and I didn’t make this up. Read about both sides.

A registries are created to track learning and job problems, etc. The idea is to “provide services” to them.

Registries are created to track these people’s progress after they are diagnosed and to recognize and study any treads in these populations.

Why is he so obsessed with autism? There are tons of conditions kids are born with that have effects comparable (and often diagnosed as) severe autism, often with additional significant physical disabilities, metabolic disorders, and such.

But he has eliminated a team that provides guidance on newborn screenings to state health depts--learned this from a letter to the editor from a doctor who used to serve on the state health dept equivalent, since this is done through state law. The original test (heel prick) was to test for PKU (metabolic which causes an amino acid to build up and leads to intellectual disabilities and other problems). Now there are a couple of dozen--all tests which are reliable, for diseases which do have treatment. That national team has been disbanded.
