I love Eileen Fisher for casual and semi-formal.

Lafayette 148 for business (with a few casual pieces, like jeans and nice sweaters).

Neither are cheap. But nice fabrics. Classic styles.

I've found a few things at J McLaughlin - there are two around Bethesda. The sales people were very patient when I needed multiple sizes and got fussy about colors and what I didn't like (no big prints, deep v-necks, buttons on shoulders, gold trim, etc).

OP here - I can't do online clothes shopping. Just too many factors have to be done in person for me.

I find a thing here and there. No patience/time for thrifting unfortunately. But I kinda know now what the current styles are for our age and this has been very helpful!

Sure - I looked some of these.
Some are too $$$ (eg Faherty nice but too expensive for how casual it is, Halsbrook, Sezane, MaxMara, etc)
Some are too plastic-y (eg Athleta)
Some are too young for my taste (Aerie...)

I don't usually follow trends, I just buy what I like and that way I usually keep liking it for years.
I find it hard or maybe I don't have the patience to shop for clothes online - it all looks good on the screen. So much of clothes is how the fabric feels and how it looks on and the color (all hard to judge online) and I'm not into back and forth buy/return. I have no time or patience for all that. Lol.

I like in general what I saw online at Pact, Tuckernuck, Marine Layer, Evereve.
I also generally like White House Black Market, Talbots, South Moon Under, department stores
Will check out Apricot Lane, Evereve, Everlane. Excited to try some new places!


I don’t think Sézane qualifies as $$$. It’s pretty mid-market imo.

I wear a wardrobe centered in great jeans and cashmere in fall/ winter - dresses and long skirts (I prefer silk maxi with a tshirt or tank) in spring/summer. A good camel coat, black coat, leather jacket, suede jacket, two trench coats.

I’ll note all is helped by being slim and in shape

If you're open to secondhand stuff, Thredup, Poshmark, eBay, etc, are good places to find some of the more $ brands. But you do have to have some patience/stomach for it not working out. You might have to kiss some frogs at first but eventually you figure out what fabrics you like/what sizes you are from particular brands and can be pretty good about getting good things at a much more affordable price.

Anthro - I liked in my 20s-30s but not so much anymore. Now I like them for their houseware
Ann Taylor is boring now
