It is amazing how NYC public schools has had very few incidents of students discharging weapons with intent to harm or kill another within their buildings. Cell phones in many schools are locked up. At so-called Impact schools started under Bloomberg, students walk through metal detectors, put bags on scanner conveyors, and are wanded down. One way in and one way out of each school. Other doors remain shut. It can feel very aggressive, admittedly, just like the yelling you get when you go through TSA security at JFK. But it seems to work. Cellphones are confiscated at many schools and locked up. That said, many of these MCPS schools have an incredible number of entrance doors that can be propped open, and often are.

How is DCPS able to have them but not MCps? Fewer secondary schools? smaller district? Is MCPS desperately trying to remain a suburban school district?

We don’t need metal detectors. We need discipline.

Just as weapons have gotten sophisticated, so too have the detectors. Haven't they? What is the plan to upkeep the machines? How much $ will that require and what other resources (e.g. staff) necessary? Who will be overseeing that aspect: schools, district, police, other?

There are options that are more sophisticated but "ghost guns" still show up on metal detectors. The ammunition always contains metal as does virtually every gun that existed, even ones that are largely 3D printed.

See other thread pilot project of some type of detectors in a handful of high schools to begin soon. Who approved for the detectors? How will it be used? Why only those schools? Are staff ready to go through detectors or will they start quitting?

Why are people not in support of the metal detectors?

Jackson Reed HS in NW DC is an example of a school that has them. Can JR parents on McPS forum chime in -- have they worked?

How would they know whether they "worked"?

That's the problem with metal detectors and other weapon sensors: even when you take a big picture view, there isn't good data supporting or refuting their efficacy. I'm skeptical, but I don't really know. No one does.
