This! Plus, SAT/ACT scores are not as important compared to GPA, course rigor, and variety. At least one AP in the five main subject areas counts for a lot. Also, having jobs and leadership positions. Essay should also convey what kind of student they will be on “grounds”. They probably aren’t too keen on the quiet mousy type. They want grads who will make a name for themselves and UVA.

Different NoVa HS here - There is no blob of green. It's all overlapping red, blue and green all the way out, except for maybe 3 or 4 outliers. It's not cut-and-dried.

Is she saying that only 34% of their applicants go to a high school which releases ranking data? My kid's FCPS school didn't rank, but I'm pretty sure they provided GPA ranges and the percentile of the class in that range in the school profile they send to colleges. It's not hard to figure it out from there.

It's these sorts of answers that annoy me when it comes to Dean J. She knows they have more detailed information than specifically "class rank".

At my FCPS school college application information night last Fall, I directly asked if they provide gpa ranges or class gpa percentiles and they said no. So at least from our school DeanJ did not have any more detailed information.

Every time people don’t get the result they want, they assume UVA is lying or hiding something. They don’t need to. They evaluate thousands of applicants per year, they know NoVA and MD schools without any double top secret details about your kid.

This was us last year (well, he was waitlisted since they didn't use deferrals last year). My DS was from a high-performing FCPS high school where he was competing against other very strong students. He had a 1500 SAT, 4.44 GPA, outstanding ECs, and 9 APs -- well, many others had a 1540 SAT, 4.47 GPA, outstanding ECs, and 12 APs. They cannot accept everyone.

Our DC got admitted with a slightly higher SAT and slightly lower WGPA. No hooks. I think only 5 APs, but he had some IBs and Dual enrollment. But lots of extra curriculars and volunteer hours, and worked a few jobs. I wonder if it was the letters of recommendation, essays, or they saw we only applied to Virginia schools, and knew it wasn't just a backup for us. Grandparents had paid for the Virginia Prepaid529 18 years ago - so we are very happy.

Yaaay, that is great. my VA resident kid just got into UMD for a highly-ranked major. Doubting acceptance to UVA in RD (yikes, yes, latecomer) so happy to hear that OOS love it there. Newer hotel on campus looks nice too.

+100 It’s funny some people think a 80%+ rejection rate won’t apply to them. Most of the rejected kids are qualified but they still get rejected.

OP, there's not a clear-cut forumulaic answer. Maybe they didn't need a (your child's gender) in (your child's desired major). Maybe the admissions officer doesn't like students who do XYZ activity. You won't know. They had more applicants this year, and deferred a lot. Hopefully they will have a larger admit group in RD for the in-state deferred students. Time will tell. Have a Plan B.

Don’t you think everyone who applies has straight As, great SATs, and amazing ECs?
