Literally everyone is criticizing Trump. He hasn’t a clue how to be a decent person or a good leader. Why should teachers be any different?

A long time ago - I’m old - my American Government teacher actually ran for state rep as a Democrat in a district that was about 70 percent Republican.

It was great. Students were allowed to volunteer with parent permission at various campaign events, stuff mailers, etc. Parents volunteered too. It was a real opportunity to see ground floor politics. He lost, but did better than anticipated and the winner came and spoke to each of the classes after the election.

The First Amendment is not really relevant here… would you support your child’s teacher preaching their religion in class? The fact is that teachers at school are representing the government and that kids are mandated by law to be in the classroom. Teachers should teach argumentation, but should not be subjecting kids to their personal beliefs. Show a little humility here.

Teachers should teach the facts to the best of their ability based on the information that is public. It has nothing to do with praise or criticism.

Not once have I discussed politics in my classroom, so I am not sure why they think my feelings about Trump are obvious. Maybe they think my race is an indicator, but they are wrong. I just keep a poker face when they tell me that they sure which teachers at our school support versus oppose Trump.

If someone thought I was a Trump supporter I would have to set the record straight. Nobody would blame you.

I criticize his policies and rhetoric in my classroom. I use facts. Including direct quotes from him. I do not criticize his disgusting personal life in front of students or hypothesize about his sanity.

The election of Trump is a reflection of our societies values. We are a country to cheaters and fraudsters who have become so accepting of low standards of living, pathetic education, and ignorant to how much our workers get screwed - so the billionaires in America can act like king of the tards- like this is better than a impoverished chaotic hellscape.

Before you start something with the teacher, please make sure that your kid is reporting what really happened, and not spinning it for dramatic effect or to get attention.

I work with medical residents who are usually in their mid to late 20s, and even then I have heard some really strange and biased reports of conversations with both myself and other attending physicians.

Some of the residents will willfully misinterpret/misconstrue what is being said during hard discussions (for instance, when we are talking about their mistakes or excessive absences that start to threaten their ability to sit for boards). It’s easier to whine that I am a hard a** than do the hard work.

But - like a high school teacher - it is my job to challenge and/or correct them!

However, it has gotten to the point where I follow up with an email after I even gently correct a resident, where I review and justify my comments and bcc the program director, so that i am covered if the resident reports me to the GME office.

It takes a lot of time and I hate it, and I just let things slide now. Honestly, I’m a terrible teacher now as compared to 5-10 years ago. And we are going to suffer for it as a society when our next generation of doctors is poorly trained.

So I think there is some value in telling your kids to not be a whiny tattletale who wants to stir the pot rather than pursuing excellence. I tell my kids if they are challenged by a teacher then suck it up, and (if possible/appropriate) defend your position by arguing back in a professional manner. And if you can’t defend yourself then maybe you are wrong and should shut up.

Even if I don’t personally like them, I really admire the residents who do that and I go out of my way to help them with regard to finding prestigious fellowships and getting them talks and on publications.
