I.e. if you have a 3.85+ from this school, college counseling will call W&M a safety. They recommend that every kid applies to 2-3 safeties but W&M can definitely be one of them.

We didn't really apply to reaches because we aren't willing to pay full price for an out of state school.
Where were you in-state?
PA.
The reach (slight) would have been Ohio State.
Anonymous wrote:Yes, at private schools there is a clear GPA line for many colleges. This is because unlike a public, you don't have 50% (or 30% or 20% or whatever..) of the class with a 4.0. You probably have 0% with a 4.0. Then you may have 2 kids with a 3.95 (and on down). So GPA actually distinguishes kids from each other.
The colleges know this so many admit solely on GPA. The 4.0 kids don't need a gazillion extracurriculars to distinguish themselves from the other 50 kids in the class with the 4.0. The GPA is enough.
Even some of the top10 schools have this sort of GPA line at our school. If you have XX GPA (which granted is high) it doesn't matter if you did original NIH research or did very little but play video games in high school---you're likely getting in--maybe not 100% likely every year but a very, very strong chance.

Please explain how this is a safety.
Stats?
My DC has great stats and we are on pins and needles waiting in ED. I ready g why yiur DC views this as a “safety” might help me relax a little.
W&M is NOT a safety for anyone. Acceptance rate is 33.5%. That makes it at most a target for a top student
Someone high stats, has a better chance but it is still not a Safety for them.
