We aren't celebrating that. We are celebrating all of the many blessings of the prior year that we are thankful for. No one is standing around chanting "Rah rah we really stuck it to those Indians!"

We knew we weren't going to be together for Thanksgiving, but would be for Christmas (bc of winter / semester break). So like you, OP, Thanksgiving to this day isn't that important to me. While I enjoy the food, it's just a day. Christmas is magical to me and a whole season to enjoy with family.
Also Christmas in Germany is 10x better than here.

It is a harvest feast. It is not the same as the Pilgrims feast, which would have had to be much earlier in Massachusetts, although that is the lore. Thanksgiving was technically established in 1941.
