McLean Police District— Detectives from our Major Crimes Bureau have arrested a Langley High School Instructional Assistant after he was seen masturbating in a classroom.
On October 11, during school hours, a School Resource Officer was notified by school administration that a student observed an instructional assistant masturbating in a classroom behind his desk. Detectives were notified and immediately began investigating.
Preliminarily, detectives determined that David Scalea, 40, of Great Falls was in a classroom and began inappropriately touching himself underneath his desk. A student observed Scalea and immediately notified school administration. No students were physically harmed.
On October 11, Scalea was arrested and charged with Obscene Sexual Display and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor. Scalea was placed on administrative leave and has been an instructional assistant with Fairfax County Public Schools since 2020. He is currently being held without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

This is disgusting.
FCPS should take a scrutiny on the staff recruiting and training process.
If he had no prior history there isn’t a way of knowing

If he is disabled, he should not be fired. Especially since October is Disability Awareness Month.

Have you seen the IA pay scale? https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/pdf/fy25-cis.pdf
Not many people with options want to work for $25-30k per year. If they work summer school too, maybe an extra $2 or $3k. That's not a living wage even for a single person with roommates. If you want good people to take these jobs, pay them better wages.
Minimum wage in Maryland right over the river is $15/hr. A full time worker at literally any job in MD makes the same money.
+1. And many IAs don’t get benefits. It’s a sh&tty job. If you want better people working in schools, pay them better, offer benefits, and treat them as professionals/train them as such. We currently don’t do any of that in our school system and therefore wind up with a lot of bad staff members in schools.
IAs get benefits, it’s basically the only reason to have the job. It is a salaried and full benefits job. I was an IA for about 3 years while in grad school, I had the job literally for the benefits. How anyone survives on the salary is beyond me.
Also to the homophobe in the comments raging, not that it matters, but IAs don’t get their own rooms to decorate. In no school that I’ve taught in has that ever been a thing. There is a significant difference between being tasked with supervision of a room and being responsible for that room itself.

Keep your sexlife out of the classroom. Everyone same looks at you as a groomer.
I’m straight actually, but if you insist I will take the pictures of my wife and kids off my desk. Don’t need any kids asking me where those kids came from.
I love that the idea of caring for a group you don’t belong to is so completely foreign to conservatives that they assume any semblance of representation means you must be part of that group. Because after all, why would you care about other people?

Also, how in the heck are they proving this happened? A kid is claiming he saw it. I’m assuming the IA is denying it. Are there others who witnessed it as well?

Hate to say it, but I'm very leery about taking one person's account as gospel. Maybe it's true, who knows. But I prefer to wait until all the facts are out.
A child in the classroom who saw what was happening took a video with their phone. The video was given to the police.
It does not appear that the video was shared on social media.
