Who is we? What does this mean? And why would "we" quarantine Olympians but not any of the thousands of people who travel daily with infectious disease, including Covid?
Whatever it is you are afraid of here is already happening all the time, the people spreads my illness just aren't famous. It's extremely likely you have spread contagious illness before too.
What if someone catches Ebola?
Do only Olympic athletes catch and spread ebola?
The point is that you f you think Olympic athletes should be quarantined then you should be advocating for all travelers to quarantine. You just happen to know Lyles has Covid because he's famous and his Covid is impacted a job he did on TV. It makes no sense to quarantine him but not any of the thousands of other people traveling after a Covid infection. Why is Olympic college vid more concerning to you than the Covid that ripped through someone's family reunion or wedding or summer camp?
But we know that these people have been in extended close contact with others. We also know that they have not been taking any precautions like wearing a mask when not actively competing. Why should we have to accept their failure to perform even basic health and safety measures?

Why stop there? Let’s quarantine all the people coming back from Europe after the Eras tour. How about all the people renting beach houses with extended family and friends from multiple states? How about all the kids who have been bunked up together at sleep away camp?
Better yet let’s just go back to pretending it’s 2020 and cancel all these things altogether!

All of which you could also say about many people attending sporting events and large gatherings all over the world. I have family who recently went to a huge family reunion with hundreds of people who had flown in from all over the US and abroad. Only a handful of them masked at the reunion. Should they all be quarantined?
Like just think about this for 10 seconds and you will see it does not make sense. If YOU are worried about Covid then you can of course mask in public spaces and avoid crowded areas. But you aren't going to successfully argue in favor of quarantining everyone who doesn't do those things.
I agree. We now have the tools and the knowledge to protect ourselves if needed. Wear a mask and check the waste water data if you're worried. Stop trying to control everyone else's behavior.
I have no problem with Lyles running in his races with COVID. I don't agree with the perspective that no one should have to take measures to protect others when they are aware that they have COVID. That's my issue. He competed in the preimins and finals when he knew he had COVID and the other athletes didn't know. He did wear a mask at times but was also up close and personal and in closed spaces without a mask at other times. I don't think it's an unreasonable expectation to want those who know they are positive and contagious to at least wear masks outside of the competition and perhaps avoid indoor spaces with others during that time.

He didn’t appear to tell the medical staff who assisted him after the race that he had Covid, or they would probably have put masks on. Who knows what health vulnerabilities were present in the people around him? Covid is not Ebola, but it’s definitely more dangerous than flu if you look at the numbers. It’s also hella contagious and if I were an Olympic athlete with another event in a couple of days I would really rather not be exposed, especially by someone who is aware that they are contagious since that particular exposure could have been avoided.
There are ways he could have run and still protected others around him better. I think he was planning on keeping it a secret, but the gig was up when he was taken out of the stadium in a wheelchair, so he had to confess.
Although the athletic performance was impressive, I’m gonna err on the side of “jerk move”. I will include his coaches on this one because I’m sure they helped him make his decisions.
If any of those people were really concerned about getting Covid, they’d have masks on themselves. They’re at the Olympics where Covid is known to be going around. If they’re in the mix with no mask, they’re probably saying “welp, if I get it I get it,” or maybe they just had it last week (or have it right now!) This constant attempt to victimize everyone is really tiresome.
