My kid is 14 (so around a year older) but if he said he was "hanging out with Billy and Bobby after school," I would not probe him about whether he was actually going to be driven to a paid activity that cost $30 in someone else's car. I'd assume it was at one of their homes or in the park or one of the two restaurants by school, which is what the kids usually do.
