Speed, inattention, overconfidence, and llack of consideration for others are all bigger problems on our crowded DC area roads than driving at or slightly above speed limit in left lane.
Reminder - driving 20 miles over the speed limit is reckless driving in both VA and MD. Always is for 85-90 miles a hour. If you are tailgating because someone is doing 75 in a 65 (rather than getting into right lane were they are doing 60) then *you* are the ahole.
So the left lane abusers are spiteful jerks? Who would have thought.
Just drive correctly FFS. It’s really not that hard.
“Correctly” doing a lot of work there.
85 or above is never correct in DMV area. It is reckless and illegal. Quit the tailgating.
Right. Driving correctly is going the speed limit or below in all lanes.
You aren’t entitled to break the law just because you’re in the left lane.
Just because you are an ignorant moon does not give you the right to create hazards for everyone else.

Don't loaf in the left lane. Period.
You’re still wrong.
The left lane is used for passing, but to pass someone you must not exceed the speed limit.
So, if I’m in the left lane and going the speed limit, it’s not interfering with anyone’s lawful use of the road. I will be passing anyone going under the speed limit.
You’re not entitled to break the law just because there is bare pavement.

It’s not debatable. Drive right, pass left.

Generally don't respond to individualized comments on here, but here you go - about a mile at most, and I am generally traveling 5-10 miles OVER the speed limit. So, no, I'm not the a-hole. The dude in the giant black pick up truck who insists on going 90-100 mph and tailgates me until I exit is.

A major problem, though, is the growing number of left exits and the absolute refusal of people to let you into the left lane to exit. Not to mention the people who tailgate and are absolute a$$h0les when you are in the left lane, going above the speed limit, with your blinker on clearly signaling that you are preparing to exit.
Also if you are in the left lane driving above the speed limit and faster than surrounding traffic, but someone absolutely insists on driving 100 mph and forces you over.
Really, this area is just full of jerkish drivers.
Anonymous wrote:Many don't know this, but is actually against the law to drive slower in the left lane of ANY multi-lane road in VA. Not just a highway. Not just 66, 495, etc. But ANY roadway divided into 2 or more lanes. Even if there are stop lights.
The law: § 46.2-804.
Whenever any roadway has been divided into clearly marked lanes for traffic, drivers of vehicles shall obey the following:
1. Any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions existing, shall be driven in the lane nearest the right edge or right curb of the highway when such lane is available for travel except when overtaking and passing another vehicle or in preparation for a left turn or where right lanes are reserved for slow-moving traffic as permitted in this section;
It does not mean driving lower than the speed limit. But "the speed of traffic." It's is relative, and "slower traffic keep right" is not about the speed limit. Thankfully, police are actually beginning to crackdown on left lane cruisers.
