The amount of people not requesting an HIV test at least every few years because they are “happily married” is astounding since the rate for infidelity is quite high. Get tested!

OMG! How traumatic! So glad you and the baby were okay.

When I was trying to conceive 12 years ago I opened my records one day and discovered my blood panel had included an HIV test. I had not requested it or been aware my doctor planned to run it. It sounds like in your case, however, it was specifically HIV testing info he brought home.

Is there an upcoming surgery? My plastic surgeon makes everyone take one.

This is so absurd it reeks of virtue signaling. You can argue whatever you want but according to government. 68% of all new HIV cases are gay or bisexual men. What percent of that group makes up the US population. Even a generous demograph is at most 5% of the US population. We want to to talk internationally that is different.

This. Everyone is saying there are innocent explanations, but if it were for a visa, or life insurance, or some mandatory annual what-have-you, OP wouldn't be finding this out this way. Pp here- I just had a physical two weeks ago and don’t think I mentioned that I was tested for HIV. It I was and I’m negative and it’s no big deal. It is much better for public health for it to become a routine test so people know their status.

I get hepatitis and HIV panels every time I’m asked at a physical. It’s a good idea even if there’s little to no risk.

I did once test positive for something associated with Hep B and my husband and I had a really awkward convo where each of us knew we hadn’t cheated. But then it turned out the association wasn’t only from Hep B.

But, to add to this, it's the nature of male homosexual sex that makes HIV spread high risk - specifically rough sex involving bleeding. You can still get it from heterosexual sex but just not as easily as anal sex and needles.

Eh. The risk of female to male transmission during vaginal or oral sex is incredibly low and female to male is pretty damned low even during anal.

Men typically get it from receiving anal from other men or needles. Women typically get it from men and even then likely during anal sex or from needles.

It doesn’t mean it’s impossible to happen in the other circumstances but the chances are really low.

Part of removing the stigma is appropriately (remember when people thought you might get hiv at the grocery store if someone with it handled produce?) is understanding the risk factors regardless of how uncomfortable that may mean about who and why people get a disease. The times have changed, we can be direct and matter of fact about HIV.

Right, if you take men who have sex with men and women who have sex with men who have sex with men and IV drug users, you get the annual number of new cases pretty darn low.
