RAVEN 2 Assists in Apprehension of Teens Following Shots Fired Call
For Immediate Release: Friday, February 9, 2024
Gaithersburg, MD - Seven teenagers are in police custody following a reported shooting on Friday, February 9, 2024.
At approximately 1:22 p.m. Montgomery County Department of Police – 4th District officers were dispatched to the area of University Boulevard West at Gable Street for a shots fired call. Fourth District officers relayed information that a group of teenage males wearing mostly black clothing, had run from the location towards Sligo Creek Parkway near Tenbrook Drive. The RAVEN 2 drone was deployed to assist in locating the teens.
RAVEN 2 quickly located subjects matching the lookout description on the Sligo Creek Parkway Trail near Sligo Middle School. RAVEN 2 maintained aerial observation and guided MCPD and Maryland National Capital Park Police officers into the area. The teens ran towards Sligo Middle School, which was placed on a brief lockdown. Officers established a perimeter and were able to apprehend seven teens.
Two bb guns were recovered and shell casings from a handgun, which has not been found, were located in the initial area of the shots fired call.
The teens, all juveniles, ranging between the ages of 14 and 15-years-old, were transported to the 4th District station and are expected to be released to their parents. Several of the teens were not Montgomery County residents.

That is 67schools x 2SROs = 134. Where are you going to find that many SROs?
Here's Erich on 'the shortage of officers' :
"We also are making it a priority to add more police officers on the street. We now have a recruitment firm in place to attract more quality candidates. We are also working on other measures to take uniformed officers out of desk jobs and put them on patrol. We increased pay for police officers to make their salaries competitive in the region, and we provided $20,000 signing bonuses to attract more talented candidates to Montgomery County. We are asking people to risk their lives, so we could not keep them at the bottom of the pay scale for our area.
We also will review dropping the college degree requirement and integrating education requirements into training. Our college degree requirement is more than most jurisdictions and does not necessarily provide added value. We are changing County regulations to allow us to rehire former public safety employees. And we are pushing to drop State requirements for public safety applicants that prohibit hiring a person who admits to past marijuana use in the previous year, even though it is now legal in the State.
I want to send a clear signal that we have a changing department that wants to encourage people to build their public safety careers here. We are focused on community policing, and adding more officers is critical to fulfilling that goal and reducing crime. The shortage of officers is the biggest challenge we face. I went on a ride-along a couple of months ago, and one thing that was apparent was that the officers seemed to go from one call to another, which did not afford much time to simply be present and patrol. We have work to do, but we are moving forward with plans to improve public safety and help police officers do their jobs safely.
If you know someone you think would be a good fit with MCPD, check out this website to learn more about the police cadet program, becoming an officer candidate or filling another vital role as a public safety emergency communications specialist.”

Make your voices heard if you want SROs back
Also, if you don't want SROs back.
I'd rather keep people with guns out of schools. SROs make schools less safe.
Agree if people wanted school safety, they'd push for common-sense gun reforms that the GOP consistently blocks.
what makes you think people aren't doing that?
We can do both: push for gun reforms and have SROs? MCPS doesn't have to be a one trick pony.
This person is a one trick pony. MCPS has no control over gun laws and even if they put in more gun laws, the guns are already on the street and people ca 3-d print them. So, we need both. However, the question is why can MCPS do about keeping our students and staff safe. Hire more security, bring back SRO's, security camera's, metal and other detectors to start with. Then, start suspending and expelling violent kids.
SROs which are now actually Community Engagement Officers are not going to be coming back anytime soon. There is a shortage of MPD Patrol officers so let’s think differently about ideas to help.
Wow - it is almost like the police have been defunded, demoralized, hobbled, denigrated, demonized by one party for years, threatened with prosecution for doing their jobs, etc.
Almost.
Seriously…. This is where you decided to take this. One could say it’s almost like the police have used and abused their position of authority against many people for years, essentially abandoning the rule of law to which they were sworn to uphold. For years people kept saying this was true and complaining but were dismissed until video after video after and investigation after investigation surfaced proving the complaints were true.
Now that we’ve dispensed with the BS and understand that there are bad apples and good apples in all things can we actually focus on solutions that work with where we are in this reality.
Ahhh yes, the Jawando approach. Blame MCPD for the ills and sins of police officers in other states and jurisdictions. Demonize our department. You mention good apples and I smirked. That’s not what we do here. Here, the council treats them all as bad apples. The PP before you was spot on.
Agree completely.
Jawando and the other “social justice warriors” in the greater DC area have passed policies which directly caused the massive crime-wave we are experiencing.
Who is paying the price? Our families and especially our kids, as violence in school gets worse every day.
My kids say there was a scuffle at their school once. It really doesn't sound all that serious. I have to wonder if the social INjustice warriors are trying to hype these issues to further their political agenda.
I think you will agree with me that the so-called “social justice” / Jawando approach had been a complete and utter failure.
And those paying the price for the SJW’s misguided and dangerous approach have been our children, who have been unwittingly thrust into a hostile learning environment.
Don’t you agree that the best practice at present would be to toss out these sorts of people from their decision-making capacities and return to a more sane approach of disciplining those children who are unable to abide by simple rules of decorum and good behavior in school?
I'm not crazy about Jawando either. Last I knew he wouldn't even send his kids to MCPS. Nevertheless, I feel threads like this attempt to hype these issues. Yes, there are incidents in MCPS but these are rare. My kids' DCC school never has any of the problems being discussed here. I'm far more concerned about the lack of focus on education.
Why do people keep repeating this lie? Only one of his kids is in private school.
