Some of the suggestions here won’t help you because the schools don’t give much merit.

What is GPA? At Pitt, student won’t get much merit to bring close to UMD’s $30k.

Look into these:

U of SC awards in-state tuition if stats are high enough
ASU
U of Arizona
MSU—and Google their merit award chart and special offerings for residents if certain states
WVU—Google their merit award chart
Alabama—Could be free if stats high enough
UVM
Central Michigan U

Does UDel or Purdue give much merit? I thought not.

1. Look at each school’s Common Data Set to see how much merit they tend to award to “non-need” students.

2. Use Google to look for merit award charts for big universities. Example: https://www.cmich.edu/news/details/cmu-amps-up-merit-scholarship






Are the merit scholarships for one year, or for all four?

This is not hard people

Go online read Project 2025.

Then go to the state your child is looking at colleges in. Check their laws. If your DD is headed to college you might want to pay attention to those bec if any red state becomes all red ie red legislature both houses and red gov. Daughters will not be attending after 2026.

That's right you all think girls will be educated LOL you have not been paying attention. Plus they will not be coming home so easily. Women will not be doing interstate travel without state approval.

Don't beleive me. Go on risk it.

4.5+ weighted. Is this University of Kansas? i do not know anything about it. Will check it out.


There is a merit chart. They will automatically get the highest amount. For us, it’s less than UMD overall because the cost of living is lower, especially for upperclassmen who live off campus.

This generality is not helpful. Nobody is saying ALL publics have great merit for OOS students. But there ARE some publics that give it, & people here are naming them.

Hi OP, fellow U of M grad. Pitt and Penn State are not interchangeable. I have attended all 3.

If your kid likes cities and liberal arts, go Pitt. If classic college campus and more of a social/partier/Greek go PSU (or MSU).

Based on my recent travels and things I've read and heard about, look into Syracuse. Agree with SUNY Binghamton and Minnesota. WVU?

OOS may not be worth it financially.


Syracuse is a private university and runs about $80k all in.
