But that's where everybody is.
Lots of over 55s in Md and Va, or even the beach ( Delaware). No need to go to Florida unless that is your culture, your politics, or preference for whatever reason. People who love Florida love it for a reason, and usually it's taxes and politics.
I’m not a fan of Florida politics but I love its weather, beaches, palm trees, vacation vibe, etc. Please don’t generalize!

Yes, I’d love to spend my retirement years with 100,000 people driving around in golf carts holding 1/2 gallon jugs of Fleishman’s gin wearing Hawaiian shirts and cargo shorts. But, people must love it!
Super MAGA there, too. And all that comes with that.
I have read that about the Villages before, and there is even a documentary about the community (I think on HBO or Vice), but the people we bought our house from were selling so they could move down there and retire from Maryland and they absolutely love it. These are very hippy, liberal and super nice people. When they told us that was where they were moving and how they couldn't wait to relocate, I was surprised given how liberal they are. I couldn't have asked for nicer sellers, they were absolutely lovely in every way. They left their grown kids in Maryland and just picked up and left. We've kept in touch with them and they're super happy about the move.
Let's of drinking and apparently a pattern of accidents related to drinking at the villages. A family friend died last year after his golf cart tipped over on him after hitting a pole late at night. He was returning from a party.. He was intoxicated, he was speeding (relative to the speed of the carts) and he was not the only one. It has happened a few times.

What I've realized in some of these communities aren't large (Villages, Leisure World are exceptions and are huge ... btw, can we get Leisure World to change its name!) Anyway, imho, you need a large complex. Some residents will be gone traveling, snowbirds living elsewhere part of the year. There will be turn-over. Some residents just aren't a likely fit, socially. Important that the community is large enough to find friends.
Leisure World is the best, so impressed and large enough that you live a normal life within the larger community outside and the reduction of cliques, etc. But YES, the name really stinks and prevents people from moving there. It should be called Rossmoor.
