Why?

If your reason for choosing a magnet program is college admissions, then you are better off not attending the magnet. It's not about the destination, it's about the journey.

The magnet administrator specifically says to prospective students everywhere that this is not the place for you if you are focused only on college applications. He wouldn’t even show his slide on where kids were admitted.

One of the reasons why my kid chose Blair over RM. This was several years ago, but RM presentation was very name dropping and tried to overtly one-up Blair. Hopefully RM has changed that with new admin. Really like Mr. O's approach.

Me too! Mt child turned down RMIB because of that. Blair is trying very hard to discourage that unhealthy competition among the kids. Which I so love. I hear positive stories from my kiddo.

This thread is really surprising to me, because I have a senior at RMIB and we have not found there to be any unhealthy competition among the kids. They are really supportive, help each other with homework and extracurriculars. etc. There are maybe one or two exceptions -- I actually get the impression that those are kids who aren't that into the program whose parents maybe forced them there, so they are under pressure to do well w/o having the internal interest. Most of the kids are there just because they really liked the concept of the program and like learning. Because of the economic diversity, a lot of the kids aren't even looking at the private schools, so I think that creates less of a sense that all the top kids are going Ivy or whatever.

On the PP's point about the racist comment at shadow day. I'm really sorry to hear that. My sense is that there are a few kids that are known for making racially insensitive comments, but that it's not looked well upon by their peers. I have kids at other schools and my sense is that every school has a few of those kids.

Class of '25 parent here. I also appreciated the Blair presentation over the RM presentation. I didn't like the name dropping and hope that the administrators are doing that less.

However, my sci/tech kid didn't want to commute to Blair and chose RMIB. He has been having a great experience at RM. Yes, there is a trade-off especially for a math/sci kid. But it is not a pressure cooker enviroment for him at all, and he is enjoying the program.

He works hard but has plenty of time for sleep and his extracurriculars. Not having a long commute certainly helps with a good night's sleep and time for ECs!
