There has never been a time period in the history of the world when there was no crime. I agree with you that we need harsher consequences, but even with harsher consequences there will still be crime and we still have to protect ourselves and act accordingly (ie quit wearing expensive coats that a$$holes are eager to steal). It is what it is. You want to walk around with your 6 million dollar coat and then act all surprised when you get robbed, go ahead. No one is stopping you. I personally will act accordingly and not do that.

Because there’s like 4 people in Alaska. If one of them commits a crime, it means 25% of the population is a criminal and the other 3 have a .33% chance of being a victim of crime.
Yeah urban crime is high in states with lax gun laws too, but also city restrictions don’t really mean anything when we’re next to Virginia. It’s not like people are having a hard time getting guns.

There’s literally orders of magnitude more guns-per-person in Virginia than in DC.
So why isn’t Virginia’s crime rate correspondingly higher than DC’s?
It’s the guns, right? That’s what you’re saying - guns cause crime. So there’s way more guns in Virginia. Why isn’t there way more crime?
Are the guns in Virginia lazy? Are they unmotivated? Why can’t the guns in Virginia influence people the way the guns in DC do?

NP. While I find PP's tone a little odd considering the fact that there was a gun(!!!) involved, I do think that if this person truly did this out of a need for a coat, they deserve pity. Hopefully they can get a warm blanket and a hot meal in jail, and hopefully people at risk of freezing can get some kind of help.

I know you are being sarcastic, but it's worth pointing out that the income spreads have become so wide that is easier to make money by stealing stupid expensive coats and really expensive designer dogs than to get a job.
I'm from a poor area and learned early on that if you flaunt wealth it will get taken from you. Buy regular les expensive coats and adopt a shelter dog and most people who need or want more money will leave you alone.
That's why the really good stuff has almost no visible branding

I don’t care what the rationale is. The victims did not deserve to be assaulted. I probably wouldn’t agree with them, think they’re smart, or like them very much, but they did not deserve to be assaulted.
