The Nazi storyline directly contradicts what Harry wrote in Spare. The whole of the last two seasons were way too favorable to Charles and William. I think there's some truth to the rumor that Peter Morgan wants a knighthood and decided to go easy on them.

The show stopped providing interesting insights a while ago.

I'm thinking of moments like the girls playing with their wooden rocking horses and greeting their Pa-Pa. Oh, and Margaret Thatcher "failing" Barmoral so badly ("bimpeldy, pimpledy, igle..."). The Queen's horse-driven relationship with her lifelong male friend.

The Margaret piece this season is the only thing that approximates the intimate perspective. That's why posters are responding to it so strongly. Against a backdrop of broad sheet run over (ex. St. Andrews and the courtship), it really shines by offering something new.

Just my two cents.

I thought I was going to love the Margaret episode based on this thread and what others had told me. It was great and I didn't cry. It's hard to watch the stuff with her health, but I actually think the focus on stuff like her feet or her physical therapy, over her personality and relationships, made it less emotional.

It made me go back to listening to Spare, once I finished the series.

I already listened to the audiobook this year, doing so again.

I feel like they rushed these last 6-12 episodes. They could have spent more time getting into the day to day. But, they went for the big events.

+1, and because he's off-putting, his character makes no sense. IRL, Harry was terrible at school and got into trouble a ton, but also affable and funny. Combined with sympathy people have for him because of his mom, it's easier to understand why he was handled with a lot of forbearance, by his family, the press, the public. Why people still liked him when he was screwing up. He was a lovable oaf.

This Harry comes off as smarter than IRL, but also unkind and smug. So when he's terrible at school or messes up, it comes off as manipulative, intentional. But also it feels like a mystery as to why anyone puts up with it, because he's also rude and unpleasant. They basically eliminated all his good qualities. Such an unnuanced portrayal.

Agree and the casting overall in this season wasn’t strong - none of the actors playing Will, Kate or Harry are good which combined with the recency of the events gives these last few episodes a Lifetime Movie feel. And considering how pro-Charles the entire series has been, I wonder if that was a conscious choice to make the actor playing Harry unlikeable.

He failed his classes in high school and there was also a cheating thing he was involved in. He’s not book smart at all.



How did he graduate from high school then?


Lots and lots of tutors and they aren’t exactly going to fail out the third in line to the throne.
In Spare he said that he really didn’t deserve to go to Eton as he knows he is not at all book smart.
I don’t think that Charles, Andrew or Anne went to University. Elizabeth was barely educated at all, but then again, when she was young, she wasn’t expected to be queen so they saw no reason for schooling her.

Same. I actually loved these final episodes, especially the way it ended. The whole thing was moving, and I appreciated the way they focused it all back on Elizabeth’s reign in a way that conveyed the weight and longevity of the monarchy. In that way, I disagree with the PP about where they chose to end the series. It showed precisely how the monarchy is bigger and more lasting than any set of individuals or events.


Really? I fast forwarded most of that Margaret episode. Did not find it interesting at all.

Also Claire Foy’s makeup was terrible and made her look weird (and I think she’s beautiful.)
