I feel like furs are considered old fashioned here because the fur industry in the US never really innovated with fashion forward cuts and patterns. When most people in the US hear "fur", they think of a full length dark brown mink, which you are right, does look horrid and mumsy.

You need to look at fashion in countries where fur is an accepted form of dressing in winter to find products that innovate and stay on trend.

Two cuts I saw recently in Eastern Europe that looked very contemporary and wearable:

1. A knee length swingy belted coat made of very closely sheared mink dyed cream/light sand color.

2. A knee length cocoon shaped young karakul coat with nehru collar.

Both looked today-appropriate and easy to wear with what people wear today.

Also, adding real fox, black or white, to trim parka hoods instead of that horrid shaggy strip of synthetic.

Deal breaker when I used to date.

Is a leather bag or leather shoes a deal breaker? I suspect not.

I don’t wear fur. But I’m confused over why leather doesn’t generate the same reaction as fur. I mean both of them require you to kill an animal to make it.

OP, since you are open to 2nd hand, have you tried asking your friends if they happen to have any furs they would want to get rid of? Many folks have furs from a grandmother or aunt that they feel bad about getting rid of, but are nervous about wearing. You may be able to score something great just from your acquaintances by just asking.

DH inherited a karakul hat from his father and set fire to it.

That’s just weird.

Fur coats are created through suffering. If you contribute this are selfish and cruel.

If you wear leather, suede or eat meat, you're obviously in no position to judge, so don't even bother, however...isn't wearing fur outdated? I mean my mother has a couple she's had in storage for decades and she wanted to wear one and I told her how old-fashioned it was. Do women under 60 still wear fur? I'm actually not trying to insult those who wear them, I'm just surprised they're still worn.

Who do you all store your furs with during the off season? Alan Furs?

DC and Richmond really aren't cold enough most years for a fur, even if they weren't a thing of the past.

The Lucketts Store always has a few furs — top floor.
