I love this thread so much. It’s reminding me that many of us thrive on a kind word.

It is incredible how a random comment from a stranger can be so meaningful and important over so many years.

My niece told me I was a "good cooker" when she was 5 and a very picky eater.

My SIL who I love, told me, when she was going through a terrible crisis, "thank you for always knowing just what to say to me to make me feel better."

My brother recently told me I was turning into our beloved late Italian aunt who was the most amazing cook, baker, gardener, story teller and overall person.

A friend's young cousin, who I met only briefly, told my friend that she found me very kind.

My college adviser said I was one of the most intelligent students he's had.

An older colleague, who I had a lot of respect for, once told me I was just about perfect when I was in a funk after breaking up with a bf.

Someone in college told me I was the most genuine person in our study abroad program.

My parents have told me that I’m a wonderful mom and much more patient than they ever were.

A parent of a swimmer I coached when I was 18 said I had a gift with children.

My husband calls me a professional parent and the best mom he could ever hope for for our daughter.

At a wedding once, the very gentle, nerdy, and quiet drunk father of my close friends told me “I’m always so happy to talk to you because when I do I feel like you really listen to me”. He was 100% not flirting with me, knowing the family it just seemed that his wife is a very extroverted and bossy mile a minute type person and he just doesn’t feel listened to.

When I was a tween, a teen girl at a pretzel stand told me I had a beautiful smile. I always remembered that one! It was so sweet and gave me confidence for years.

I love reading these and I don't care even a tiny bit if other people think they're schmaltzy.

I finished a jumper course and when I came out of the ring, a top rider said, "That's the best I've ever seen anyone ride that horse.". Maybe all of the horse's previous riders were crap, but I had a severe case of imposter syndrome and his comment really helped me.

The other one was when a friend of my dad's told me how much I reminded her of him. I still can't quite believe that one. My dad was absolutely incredible.

Beautiful. I'm a retired secondary history teacher and can think back on many wonderful letters and messages I have received from students. But one of the best was in reponse to a large project I would assign my 11th grade US History students each year. When studying immigration, I would give them a multi-part project where they had to research their heritage and write a paper on the history of their ethnic group's immigration to the US. Then they would research their own family's journey and write about it. I had kids who traced their families back several generations, and I had kids who were immigrants themselves. It was a very personal and meaningful assignment. One year I had a girl who was adopted from a country that was a completely different ethnicity/culture from her adoptive family. She struggled to decide whether she should write about her biological ethnicity, or that of her adoptive family. In the end she chose her adoptive family and when her father came for parent-teacher conferences, he cried and said it was a major turning point in her life and their family that she chose to identify with their culture and ethnicity. He said it was the best assignment he had seen any teacher give to their students. I was really touched by his raw honesty.

I know the game you're talking about.

We were playing that same game and the question was basically "who is the nicest person here", and everyone put down DH. I think he was really touched by that.

And it's true. He would give the shirt off his back to a stranger
