I get the sarcasm, but actually, where i used to drop my kids off, it was a parking lane on a busy road where recently there have been more than 5 car jackings, so sadly, were I in that situation today, I might not take that risk.
OP, follow the lead of others, or ask the school what other do, if you don't know the area well yet, and in the end only you can make the judgment on whether it is safe where you are.
