That's what we do. I RSVPed for a wedding this morning and there wasn't even anything over $425 on the registry, and that was one thing. No way most people are spending $500.

We give about $50 in cash or a gift. Don't really care what they think.
For the next wedding we're attending I'm spending about 1k on lodging so I don't feel badly about this.

This is what it has been in my friend circle too. The "kids" (friends of the couple) about 100 dollars per person, 200 dollars a couple. The "adults" (friends of the parents) about $500.

I'm 33 so it's been peak "wedding season" for about 5 years...everyone in our age group is giving $100-$200. $200-$250 for our closest friends. $500 is reserved for the well-off parents' friends.
I'd be a bit uncomfortable if our friends spent that much on our wedding gift.

We give $250 for a wedding gift, our income is about $200k.
Factor in that I also probably got a $100-$200 registry gift for the shower as well.
We don't live near family and always need to travel to these events and that is a factor as well.

What? No!
We gave our DC gifts worth that much but would not give that much for everyone.
Maybe it is common in some circles, but not in ours.
I have not seen wedding registries with items that expensive …
