Of course they were off, the school system was closed. You don’t work for a school system, Duh!

I’ve worked as a 12-month employee for FCPS and ACPS; in neither case did 12-month folks get these breaks off. We could use leave (and we’re encouraged to) but if you did not take leave you were expected to be at work on those days. It’s VERY unusual for 12 month staff to get those breaks off automatically.

No, YOU're wrong. Syphax staff had yesterday off just like the students. They were not working from home. Ask me how I know.
No school day = syphax day off. Maybe some limited staff worked; but it was not a regular work day for them as a whole.

The difference, and point, is that Syphax staff were off and PAID; while 10-month contract employees like teachers were off and not paid. The issue is the amount of paid time off the 12-month syphax people are getting. It's understandable that teachers aren't getting paid for summer break, since their contracts are only for 10 months. But that doesn't mean it's right for syphax staff to get all the school breaks off - paid - in addition to their regular annual/sick/personal leave. The compensation package, or benefits, or whatever you want to call it, is out of proportion v. teaching staff.
