I live in N Arlington and most people I know IRL have sort of mixed feelings about it, but don’t talk about it on a regular basis and are just seeing what happens. The only people I know who have up yard signs and are really vocal about opposing it are the olds who will be out of here in the coming years anyway. Maybe this will make them sell off early, who knows. It’s a major stretch to say it’s tearing the community apart.

“Mixed feelings” = being personally against it but afraid to voice opposition because of fear of what people might think about you.

This is the beauty of messaging that somehow MM is anti-racist and that SFH = racist when there is zero evidence that MM will increase the proportion of Black homeowners in Arlington.

That's on you, though? Have the courage of your convictions.

Yes, you should absolutely blame the victims who will be falsely accused of being racist or otherwise being “the man” if they question the YIMBY motives or methods. Look at them, being concerned about their neighborhoods. The nerve of not buying the narrative!

And did you see what they were wearing?

A YIMBY blasted me on their Facebook page because I said my family owned a number of properties that we would be selling as older relatives move to other care or died. However, we would sell them to builders who want to do single family homes because the process we had used in the past was the most lucrative and easiest for the relatives and families. I was called a privileged white man who was a racist, misogynist, elitist who did not care about Arlington because I was a rich lawyer who only stole land so that my McMansion could be built there.

Wowee. I am black woman, an Arlington native, whose family is descended from Martha Washington's slaves who were brought to Arlington House by her son. Most of the family homes were built by family members in a now-gentrifying part of Arlington and would be worthless without the land. I joined the Marines at 17, got a GED, got out of the military and created a successful service business. We have no McMansion and 4 happy, healthy kids.

Wowee. Someone on the Internet was mean to you? Thoughts and prayers in this difficult time!!!

Who needs the internet. If you went to any of the small meetings with ACB members, the ACB board meetings, or any of the YIMBY meetings, they said a lot worse and said it to everyone who did not agree with them. My mom, who taught political science at a top university, was visiting and came to one of the meetings with me. She was literally speechless over the exaggerated claims made by the YIMBYs about the type of housing that would be built in single family neighborhoods and who could afford to buy it. Someone shoved a placard into her hands and told her to hold it up during the meeting if she didn't want to get "kicked out" of Arlington. We made it through about an hour.

Oh sounds like the white YIMBY who assumed a black woman couldn’t be a property owner of multiple houses and felt comfortable smearing them in public has found the chat.

You’re free to sell to whomever but how is limiting your buyer pool the most lucrative option? Wouldn’t the highest offer be the best, regardless of what the builder is planning for the lot?

How do you know that selling for SFH is not more lucrative than selling for MM?

The reality is that the MM numbers don’t really add up, unless you think people will pay $1 million for a 1 BD in a fourplex without any amenities.

This dude is my new favorite rabbit hole.

First off, $4m house from running a daycare? is that typical? i thought daycare workers were paid so little because there is so little money after running the business?

Second, he is now out of that gig and an "entrepreneur" -- with no mention of his new business, though I suspect it's "real estate mogul wannabe".

Finally, let's say people did get sus about his families designs for such a huge property -- does anyone know if they have moved in or started renovation or anything, or if they just bought it waiting for MM to be passed? No one would ever assume someone is a worker on a property unless they climbed out of a landscaping truck with a landscaping polo on -- its 2023 and Arlington is way to woke for that. But how did the newspaper even find these owners to get these racy quotes?? Are they going around complaining about their new neighbors to the newspapers? How did they even get interviewed for the story?

Many people around here are loaded. Not sure why you're questioning the finances of this particular couple. Who met each other in law school.

The author of the article seems to be following missing middle & other local real estate news. He has written about this property *and* local racism before so not surprising that he's following up on it.
https://www.fcnp.com/author/charlie-clark/

Sure maybe he’s wealthy, but from daycare — which famously underpay their workers.

You are sure making a lot of assumptions about this couple. Why do you assume it's the husband who is wealthy? Why do you assume it's just from daycare?

No one assumes the $ are solely from daycare profits. The main point of reviewing what can be built on the 1.17 acre lot is the fact that the ARL persons in charge had no common sense on lot size and what can be built by right zoning. From number of units to access, parking, vehicle count.

PP was definitely making assumptions about who was wealthy and why.

They are presumably both attorneys given that they met in law school. There are a billion wealthy attorneys in Arlington. Interesting that the PP is questioning how this particular couple gained their wealth.

Zoning is a different topic than the comments above.

I'm not surprised two rich attorneys marketed their palatial development as some anti-racist production. Gets them good press and ensures neighbors and the county are pre-emptively racist in case they dare to complain.

Neighbors can complain all they want. The couple can do many things here by right.

Right but if your new townhouse development is protested vehemently by the neighbors, future buyers will see that press and be hesitant to buy

Calling neighbors racist is probably dicey too, but the stink of buying one of the hated townhomes will depress the value.

The only thing that will depress the value in that neighborhood is being zoned to the dicey Taylor Elementary School.

What’s dicey about Taylor??

The principal and vice principal.

The new principal?

Location will keep Arlington desirable to an extent but there will a a lot of bad blood due to MMH. I live one town over in McLean, this is just my reading, of course I could be wrong . We pass through N Arlington many times on our way to restaurants and such and I see plenty of opposition to MMH via yard signs. I guess we shall see how this shakes out.
