GPA is low for UVA unless that is top 5% in the class.
Hmm, don’t know the class rank. Not placing blame at all but guidance counselor all but called it a sure thing because of the NMS commendation.
UVA and VT were in the Washington Post article saying NMS doesn’t hold weight with them.
well then what actually does hold weight with them? I have been reading the admission blogs from time to time and they some come across as quite condescending.

Overall just a strong, smart, passionate student who has worked his tail off in high school and is NOT feeling the love. Maybe bc last name is literally at the end of the alphabet and people get tired reading apps??? Who knows. It's hard to respect the game when you have no idea what the rules are.

Your guidance counselor said that? I'm surprised because it's common knowledge that UVA does not weigh test scores heavily. UVA is much more about rigor of courses and grades in core courses. Dean J says over and over again, they have no problems with TO.

Co-worker's child is doing this now. Year has gone by fast and has been good transition - kind of like prep school - before heading to main campus. May not be for everyone but they have no complaints and are excited about next year.
Thanks for sharing. Is the kid doing CS or Math related majors. I'm leaning towards UMD as other posters mentioned instead of going this route. With 1590/4.4 gpa and internships and good ECs but no national or state level awards. Need to figure what went wrong as other decisions with Georgia Tech and similar didn't go well. Need to prepare for DD for next two years of similar ordeal.
