We don't have a clue. I think my kid is a great student/person and thought he would get accepted somewhere at the start of this. But partner thinks we'll be waitlisted everywhere. He's probably right.

Your chances are almost 0 at the top schools unless you're a very wealthy, a famous person or have connections to the school.
Almost everyone is in the same boat especially for the youngest kids when you don't have grades and an academic and extracurricular track record.

It's not a good feeling because it's so random and the criteria are not clearly laid out.


Chances are not almost 0. We have no wealth, fame or connections. Two kids got into 3 different schools at different times.

No, but my child is 13. I don't think anything is guaranteed, but we have a fair idea of where he will likely get in vs. waitlisted or rejected. We know what his grades and extracurriculars are. We know what the acceptance rates at schools are. He didn't want to apply to any of the most competitive schools. That's not saying he is guaranteed to get in where he did apply, just that we have a ballpark idea of his chances.

Hopefully their emails are much nicer than last year. Their rejection messages were downright mean.

You are not alone. A big part of it is the numbers game. Plenty of well qualified kids are not admitted due to number of spots available. So there's no way of knowing if the news will be good or not. It’s a big part of the stress even when playdates and interviews go well.


+1 - we are feeling a great deal of uncertainty over here. Coming from a K-8 with a clear (and articulated) first choice. Wondering if that will help?


Articulating first choice is always a good move.

I’m getting tired of these decision emails. It’s like they are teasing. I click hoping to get some news and they tell me to wait until tomorrow.

This is deflating. We applied to the "Big 5" and haven't received a single "thanks for interest" note. :/


Don't worry! We got into 3 of the 3 we applied to for preK (big-whatever schools) and never heard a word from the schools during the application process.
