I was thinking the same thing. 6-8th grade boys are shorter than the girls, have not hit the throws of puberty, stink and generally look like little boys. As where half the girls look like grown women. I can see why they aren’t attracted to the boys as assume their are bi since their girl friends are appealing

Right but this has already been true.

Right, but the default used to just be, the boys are still gross. Now it is, go I'm probably be bi/gay

I don't know what middle school you went to but girls have always been looking for somebody to "go with" or call a "boyfriend" in 6th and boys are just not "into it" yet.

They don't' think boys are gross, they just are a step or 2 ahead.

No one is saying it’s trendy for all kids. Only that there seem to be a lot of bandwagoners.

I'm the PP whose DS is gay. This whole convo is somewhat irritating because it does not specify girls. This is primarily a girl phenomenon, for whatever the reason. This isn't "kids." Sure, maybe a few boys will join as well but they're the vast minority.

The gulf between boys and girls and how they are able to express their sexuality is so vast that it cannot be discussed in the same sentence.

So, why does there appear to be so many girls in MS who identify as gay/bi/trans? FWIW, I don't care. They'll work it out. It'll be fine.

Seems perhaps this thread isn’t for you, but thanks for your thoughts.

All of these threads are like this. "Kids, kids, kids."

No. It's girls, girls, girls. Don't pretend that there is inclusivity when there's just not.

IDk, it's true for my nephews friend's group but he is gay so.

I say kids on purpose because it’s gender neutral, and among my DD’s friend group, there are kids born female who use she, he and they pronouns.

It's not just girls. There are also trans girls who are AMAB. You can opt your DC out of this conversation - but we are still wondering.

This. It’s in. Kids do it as an attention device

Social media is to blame for so much of this fad. Social media is so toxic and harmful to youth!

Secondary to it is kids desperately seeking attention.

Then why is it a regional phenomenon if social media is to blame.

I don’t think it is regional. I’m in Midwest suburb and it same.

+100

It’s everywhere.

My HS daughters say there is a term for this “being chronically online”.
It seems like even among this age group there is a sense that those who go really far with this identity stuff, have been overly influenced by social media.

Not always. My daughter has a friend who is a biological female, presents as a female - including long hair, makeup, and wearing feminine clothing such as skirts. Yet, she chooses to be called he as her pronoun - not they, but HE!

I truly don’t get it and to be completely honest it seems very bizarre to me.

What city is this? Public or private school?

OP said public. And this is how it is everywhere.

No, it's a regional phenomenon.

I don’t live in the DCUM region and I have observed the same where I live.

There are other liberal enclaves outside of DC (e.g., California).

It’s not just in liberal enclaves. This is also very common among teen girls in my conservative hometown.

I’m a MS teacher and you are right. The number of kids identifying as gay, bi, or trans has greatly increased over the last few years.
However, it’s almost entirely among girls.
